I will not be telling you these players are the best players in the league, some maybe utility role players, maybe even a “journeyman” or two; well maybe one of them I believe is in the top 5 in MLB. These players will play key roles for fantasy purposes to fill your bench in deeper leagues and to plug them in on “off days” for your regular starters, be it a manager’s choice to give a player the night off or the days the schedules are light ie., Monday and Thursday.

First is Los Angeles Dodger Mookie Betts, of course. he is a top 5 MLB player as Yahoo Fantasy Baseball player as well. Mookie is ranked 5th and I believe rightfully so. Betts has 2B/SS/OF eligibility. Mookie was an All-Star last season, MVP runner up, hit .307 with 39 HRs and 107 RBI in 693 at bats.

I think this player is the best of the “multiple position” guys, and one of my new favs to have on my teams, Spencer Steer of the Cincinnati Reds; the 26 year old slugger does it all besides pitch and catch basically, Steer is listed at 1B/2B/3B/OF. In 2023 Steer stroked 177 hits, mashed 26 home runs, with 86 RBI, stealing 15 bases, putting up a .263 avg in 677 at bats. This article isn’t about who you can wait for or luck out at the end, well at least not for this one, Spencer is 97% owned in Yahoo, grab him… or if I’m your league I will.

Justin Turner is 1B/2B/3B eligible. Turner could spend time at 3B and 2B this season for the Blue Jays. Last year, Turner appeared in 146 games for the Red Sox and hit .276, for 11 straight seasons Turner averaged .275 or higher. Turner also hit 23 home runs in 2023 with 96 RBI and 154 hits. Turner may be getting older (39 years old) but he’s still a strong four-category producer with eligibility at 3 positions. Turner is very well rostered as well at 84%, so he will not fall to waivers post draft.

Willi Castro of the Twins is only 10% rostered, These players are not in any particular order by the way. he filled in all over the field last season for the Twinkies. Willi played 2B/3B/OF, this player I am looking at is for his base running skills, in only 112 games he surpassed the 30 stolen base plateau by swiping 33 bags. Nothing else overly flashy to see here, Castro hit 9 homeruns while batting .257. with injuries, and lets face it all teams get them Castro is a nice plug-in at any spot he’s comfortable filling.

Speaking of injuries and the Minnesota Twins, I’m looking at Twins’ Alex Kirilloff 1B/OF. Kiriloff hasn’t played in over 100 games yet in his 3 year career, he only played in 88 games last season. Kiriloff did hit 11 homers and 41 RBI, He’ll probably still sit against lefties, but he should play regularly against right handers, with this player I’m taking a chance on health here and “hoping” for his potential to finally shine, if he stays healthy he could help fill the need at 1B or OF.

Brandon Drury 1B/2B he also used to play 3B so who knows if he needed to fill in there, I am sure the Angles would have no problem shifting him to the hot corner if need be. Drury’s 2022 season he hit 28 home runs with 87 RBI and a .263 average split between Cincinnati and San Diego. Brandon Drury followed up the ’22 season with 26 home runs and 83 RBI and a .262 average in just 125 games. Having multiple positions should be and can be extremely beneficial in deeper leagues. There is also DH duties he could fill in there for the Angels meaning that he will see more at bats this season. He will be batting in the top few positions in the Angels lineup. The Angels aren’t one of the most highly explosive teams these days, but plugging him on a daily basis for fantasy purposes in the utility spots or putting him in 1b or 2B if one of your superstars is off will be great.

Yainer Diaz C/1B A catcher with 1B eligibility is a gift I always say. Diaz, In just 104 games last season hit 23 home runs and 60 RBI, Yainer Diaz hit .282, guys I don’t know about you but a catcher than can hit even close to that average and set the table for his teammates or clear them off the board with that kind of pop is a guy I want on my team. Not only is he great for his multiple position eligibility, he’s a top 5 catcher in my opinion.

Honorable mentions: Isaac Parades 1B/2B/3B, Luis Rengifo 2B/SS/3B/OF. Alec Bohm 1B/3B, Christopher Morel 2B/Of.

I know I missed some, but I am certain if you use some of these players and strategies you should be in good shape and compete nicely in your leagues, as always have fun and good luck this season

One response to “fantasy Focus; Hitters with multiple position eligibility”

  1. […] Opening day 166 players between all 32 teams were placed on the injured reserve list. For fantasy baseball owners, they have to be aware of this, because if their team misses even one start that could cost you either a weekly or a daily victory. If you also want to look into the same or similar strategy for HITTERS, click here. […]

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
