Mickey Moniak struck a 1-year $1.25M deal on Wednesday night with the Colorado Rockies, according to multiple reports. The Moniak signing is to be considered an outfield depth and speed signing for this Rockies organization. A change of scenery for Moniak could do some good in potentially boosting his career.

Moniak is a former #1 overall pick in the 2016 MLB draft, drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. Unfortunately for Moniak, his stay with the Phillies organization didn’t last long. Moniak, a minor leaguer at the time within the Phillies organization, was shipped out to the Los Angeles Angels in a trade for pitcher Noah Syndergaard in 2022.
In his tenure with the Angels, Moniak played a grand total of 209 games. Last season Moniak played his first full season with 124 games played, posting a stat line of a batting average of .219, 14 HRs, and 49 RBIs. His release by the Angels took place on Tuesday after beating the team in an arbitration hearing. The release came as a surprise because it was expected going into the season that Moniak would split center field duties with Jo Adell and Mike Trout would move to right field.
Over the weekend the Rockies also made a trade in a player swap, sending outfielder Nolan Jones back to the Cleveland Guardians for INF/OF Tyler Freeman. The Rockies are in full swing in continuing to add to their outfield with the Mickey Moniak signing. At only age 26 I believe in Moniak being able to turn his career around in terms of his production. I look forward to rooting for Moniak in a Rockies uniform this upcoming season with Opening Day being this Friday.
