The Yankees Have to Keep Playing Oswaldo Cabrera

When DJ Lemahieu went down in spring training, it seemed like a small setback. Yesterday the Yankees received some clarification, and it is no longer a small setback. His injury has now been diagnosed as a non-displaced bone fracture, which will be reevaluated in two weeks, and who knows how long his rehab will be after that, before he returns to the Yankee lineup.

But no problem. To start the season Oswaldo Cabrera, has been red hot and carrying the Yankees offense in the opening four game series vs, the Astros to start the season. Cabrera is 7 for 13 with 2 HR and 6 RBI’s. Its not the numbers that are impressive, its also he has come up in big situations and delivered. Yesterday, with the Yankees down 3-1 in the seventh inning, he came through with a big 2 Run home run to tie the game, and Juan Soto delivered the go ahead run, with his first Homerun as a Yankee to propel the Yankees to a come from behind victory.

The Yankees who acquired Joe Berti, just before spring training ended from the Marlins was suppose to get most of the bats in Lemahieu’s absence. I am sure he will get some at bats as the season progresses. But for now its Cabrera’s position to lose.

This is a huge contrast to 2023, when he showed a lack of confidence, and was tentative at the plate, and was actually sent down to the minors, which lowered his confidence even more.

Until Cabrera really struggles, which he shows no signs of at this point. Manager Aaron Boone will have Cabrera in the lineup everyday with his hot bat.

As long as the Yankees keep winning, Cabrera will be at third base for awhile, and it doesn’t matter where the production comes from. Once Aaron Judge gets his bat on track this offence will be on top of the world.
