Who Will Replace DJ Lemahieu On Opening Day?

The injury bug keeps biting the New York Yankees. With DJ Lemahieu most likely out for opening day vs the Houston Astros, with a bone bruise.

LeMahieu had a very disappointing season in 2023, which in his standards was one of his worst. He hit a disappointing .243 so 2024 should be a bounce back year for him, but with the bone bruise injury, his debut might have to wait a little longer.

Even if Lemahieu misses time, don’t expect it to be to much time. Opening day injured lists can be backdated to three days, so he could be out for only a week, if he is put on the 10 day IL.

Lemahieu is expected to be the everyday bookend at third base, with Anthony Volpe, Gleyber Torres, and Anthony Rizzo rounding out the infield respectively.

As it stands right now, the Yankees have Oswaldo Cabrera, Jahmai Jones and Jorbit Vivas on the roster. None of those names really wow you either, if Lemahieu is out for a longer period of time.

With the end of spring training looming, some veterans might get cut, and the Yankees might be able to sign one for short term. One player who comes to mind is Josh Harrison, who decided not to go to the minor leagues, after he was released by the Reds. Veterans Donovan Solano, and Evan Longoria are still available and they might come cheap, as well. At this point Longoria would be the best bet, as he is a natural third baseman and can hit as well.

The biggest concern the Yankees might have with Lemahieu, if the injury is long term as the season progresses. So signing a bonafide veteran at this point should be top priority for the Yankees.

With Gerrit Cole the Yankees their ace, out for 4- 12 weeks, the Yankees can’t afford a long absence from their veteran stars. Until Lemahieu is healthy again, look for the Yankees to scan the waiver wire in the next coming weeks. All depending how LeMahieu’s injury progresses and if he heals quickly.

  1. all their realistic options are question marks being most the talent is still in the minors, Oswaldo Cabrera isnt that good but can play the position sadly seems like the most sensible guy, in my opinion, great article .
