Welcome to the Bronx Mr. Berti, Jon Berti has been obtained from the Miami Marlins in a 3 team trade which sent catcher Ben Rortvedt, who had no real role in NY to the division rival Tampa Rays, minor league outfielder Juan Cruz to the Marlins, and outfielder Shane Sasaki to Miami from Tampa.

I recently wrote an article for fantasy baseball readers titled “The best fantasy Baseball options with multiple position eligibility” (which will be published in the next 48 hours) I actually did not include Jon Berti in the article at all, but here is a breakdown of what he can do and where he plays. He basically does everything but catch and pitch, he plays 2B/SS/3B/OF. Jon Berti played 4 games in 2018 for the Blue Jays then moved to Miami where he spent 5 years. There’s nothing that blows off the page with Berti besides his speed, in 2022 he stole 41 bases. The fact that he can play all over the diamond is exactly what NY needs. The New York Yankees have been hit with the injury bug more than almost any team out there.

Berti had an average of .294 with 7 home runs, 33 RBIs and 16 stolen bases last year, down from a major league high 41 steals in 2022. He batted .229 with 1 home run and 6 RBIs in spring training, striking out 12 times in 35 at bats. Berti has a $3,625,000 salary and is under team control for two years. When he hits free agency at the end of the 2025 season, at that time he will be 36 years old.

Berti has the skill set that should play well in New York seeing as the Yankees already have a star studded lineup with plenty of power, but are somewhat lacking in speed aside from Anthony Volpe.

Let’s take a look at his college days and how he transitioned to the big leagues. Jon Berti worked at his practice while playing baseball at Bowling Green State University. In Berti’s 3 years at Bowling Green, He would hit 11 home runs and 93 RBI, amassing 207 hits in 146 games with 56 stolen bases. He was originally drafted by Oakland in 2008, but declined to sign He was later selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 18th round of the 2011 MLB draft. While in the Minor leagues after signing with Toronto, Berti was a threat on the bases, Berti stole 23 bases with Vancouver in Low-A ball, in AA Berti stole 38 while playing for the Blue Jays affiliate New Hampshire Fisher Cats, then with the AAA Buffalo Bissons, Berti racked up another 23 stolen bases.

I personally like this trade for the versatility factor of his fielding and definitely love the speed factor he brings to the team.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
