The MLB Draft was held a few days ago, July 13th and 14th to be exact as part of the 2025 All-Star festivities in Atlanta Georgia. Some teams got future All-Stars, and some got players who will never make it to the show. Some teams focused on high school player, some college athletes, some pitchers, some hitters, and some teams can’t help but pick from baseball bloodlines. The Yankees did all the above in their first 5 picks. Here is some vital information on them all.

Yankees: Dax Kilby a shortstop from Newnan High School in Georgia. The 18 year old was ecstatic over the news of being selected in the first round of the draft, Dax took part in a pre-draft workout at the Yankees’ Tampa complex, this visit left a lasting impression on the youngster.

“I felt like I was very welcomed,” Kilby said on Thursday. “I really loved everything about the Yankees organization while I was down here. Leading up to the Draft, I knew that I just wanted to be a part of this organization. This was the team I was hoping for.”

Kilby in his senior year hit .495, 53 runs scored 5 HR, 4 RBI, 15 stolen bases with 33 walks, and a .838 slugging percentage. A consistent contact hitter who hits to all fields.
Among these great stats Kilby was also named Georgia High School Association MVP, Georgia’s 2024-25 Baseball Player of the Year, Georgia Male Athlete of the Year, and Rawlings Region 3 All-Region and High School All-America Second Team.

The Yankees next pick comes in round 3, they selected Kaeden Kent, another shortstop from Texas A&M, Kent is the son of former 2B from the Giants Jeff Kent. Kaeden Kent comes with very good upside another contact hitter who doesn’t strikeout a lot, 14% K rate. Kent is also not just a SS, he has played all over the infield, even played some outfield, so he comes with great versatility. Batting .279, 13 HR, 49 RBI, 52 runs scored and a .943 OPS for the 2025 season.

NY picks Left hand pitcher Pico Kohn with their 3rd selection, I like this guy a lot. Fastball sits at 92 mph right now, the weird release point makes this pitch interesting, the crossbody action which creates a very wide release point, making his fastball have a high swing and miss rate in the zone.
The other pitches Kohn possesses are a gyro slider and looping curve ball, the Yanks are obviously going to work on getting Pico to add more velocity to the FB which is already a nasty pitch. Adding a changeup to the repertoire will definitely solidify Kohn into the rotation.
Kohn’s ERA and win loss record are no indication of how good he is, he had a 5-4 record with a 4.72 ERA, but in 80 innings of work struck out 114 batters and only walked 29 with a pretty miniscule .227 avg against him.

The 4th pick comes in round 5, another pick I like (biased Canadian here) another shortstop Core Jackson, a Wyoming Ontario kid. Jackson coming out of the University of Utah is 21 years old stands 6’2″ weighing in at 192 lbs, a lefty bat with pull power which is perfect for Yankee Stadium. This season, Jackson led Utah in batting average .364, slugging percentage .641, on-base percentage .445, runs scored with 61, hits 75, RBIs 44, doubles 19, home runs 12, total bases 132 and 20 stolen bases as well. A compact hitter with great contact, making him a slugging machine.
Jackson was a runner-up for the Brooks Wallace Award, which goes to the nation’s best college shortstop.
Core Jackson is also highly thought of on the defensive side as well. The numbers back this up as he had 117 assists and was involved in 25 double plays.

Wrapping up the top 5 draftees is Rory Fox a RHP and product of Notre Dame baseball. Fox has a classic mix for a starter, with four pitches that have very distinct movement profiles, and the upside is that the Yankees can take a repertoire full of middling pitches and make one or two of them above average to putout pitches. He has a Fastball that sits in the low 90s but has touched 96 mph, a classic slider, changeup and curveball. Fox transitioned from a relief pitcher to full time starter, he posted a 3.58 ERA with 64 strikeouts, 27 walks while allowing just 44 hits and only 3 HR across 65.1 innings of work. Fox’s batting average against was a putrid .187 average.

Fox still has another year of eligibility, so there’s a chance he doesn’t sign and returns to The Irish for his senior season to improve his draft stock, but I don’t expect that to happen. With signing bonuses already slotted, and Fox likely to receive at least $300,000 for signing, it would be somewhat surprising if Fox passes on the Yankees.

[…] One of their selections included Core Jackson, a shortstop from Ontario (see previous published article) Not that I don’t want to talk about Jackson again, cause believe me I like what I see so far […]

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
