The Colorado Rockies are forced to play in the West, in what is arguably the strongest division in the National League. Having the Dodgers in the division, not only has the division, but the league as a whole is trying to keep pace. Some teams, like the Rockies, don’t necessarily have the financial capital to keep up with a team in that way. Therefore, Colorado typically has the mindset to build from within, with their farm system and building through the draft.
They have managed to draft talented players that have come through the farm system and made smaller transactions, that in my opinion, could pay dividends for the upcoming season. Here are some names for the infield that as a fan we should both be excited about going into the season. Plus stay tuned to WeLikeSportz as I will have articles in the coming days on both the Rockies outfield and pitching.
Infield
1B-Michael Toglia 26 years old – Toglia is having quite the Spring Training, building on last season’s production of 25 HRs. Toglia is a special talent. He’s a switch hitter that provides power to a lineup that helps bolster the Rockies offense. While hitting .218 last season left a lot to be desired, I think he can build on that. Toglia also brings a defensive prowess with his glove at 1st. Rockies fans, I ask of you to invest in Toglia stock, I have strong beliefs that he ends the carousel of 1st basemen since the Todd Helton days at 1st and also known as the ‘TODD FATHER.”

2024 Stats-In 116 games played Batting Avg .218 25 HRs 55 RBIs.
2B-Thairo Estrada 29 years old (Free Agent acquisition)- In what was a down season for Estrada that was derailed by injuries, do not let the 2024 season fool you. Estrada is a solid veteran presence and an underrated signing in terms of the impact he can have on both offense and defense. Estrada is a speedster and has proven just that in both 2022 and 2023. Estrada also offers stability at second base as #4 ranked prospect as Adael Amador continues to develop. It helps avoid rushing the process, which is detrimental to a player’s development. Estrada has found success with his bat when it comes to Coors Field that was not anticipated when transferring over from his playing days with the Giants. Tovar and Estrada could make for an elite defensive pairing in the middle of the diamond at both second and shortstop. Estrada in my opinion is going to prove to be an underrating signing when all is said and done.

2024 Season Stats 96 Games Played / Batting Average .217/ 9 HRs/ 47 RBIs
SS-Ezekiel Tovar 23 years old – The Rockies have a niche when it comes to discovering talent at shortstop. Troy Tulowitzki, Trevor Story and now Ezekiel Tovar. Tovar is an elite talent on the defensive front, there isn’t a play where I have a doubt in him making. Tovar has the accolades already to prove that he is an elite talent on defense. He proved that by becoming the 2024 Gold Glove Award Winner at short. Along with the defense this season, his rise will continue on the offensive side of the ball. Tovar led the Rockies with 26 HRs coupled with leading the National League with 45 doubles. Even though Tovar was left out of the MLB Top 100 he is a superstar in the making.

2024 Season Stats 157 Games Played / Batting Average .269/ 26 HRs / 78 RBIs
3rd Base–Ryan McMahon 30 years old- McMahon is one of the best in the National League at the 3rd base position with his elite defensive. McMahon has the ability to make any throw on the diamond. Though he hasn’t won the Gold Glove Award, McMahon he has been a finalist 3 years in a row and received his 1st All-Star selection last season. Bleacher Report has him ranked their 12th best 3rd basemen. McMahon came on strong last season that earned him the All-Star selection, that production took a dive and left a little to be desired. If McMahon can be consistent and finish strong it could definitely help the Rockies in the win column.

2024 Season Stats -153 Games Played/ Batting Average .242/ 20 HRs 65 RBIs
Final Thoughts: At this point, this compared to last season, the Rockies are in a better position with what they have in their infield in terms of talent. The infield has a combination of young talent that can be corner stones along with some veterans that can produce in a multitude of ways. GO ROCKIES!
