Edwin Arroyo

Edwin Arroyo was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico on August 25th, 2003. Arroyo played high school baseball in Puerto Rico so he would be eligible for the Rule 4 Draft, more commonly known as the First Year Players Draft. Scouts loved Arroyo’s defense. He’s was rated a 55 grade defender and a 60 grade arm. He was one of the youngest players in his draft class at just 17. His offensive ability was no slouch either, he was rated a 45 grade hitter and a 50 grade in power. He was the number 1 overall prospect out of Puerto Rico and would commit to play at Florida State University, but would ultimately opt to play professionally. The Seattle Mariners would draft Edwin Arroyo with the 48th overall pick in the second round in the 2021 Draft.

Pro Baseball Debut

Arroyo would make his pro debut for the Seattle Mariners in the ACL in 2021. In 21 games, Arroyo would bat .211, hit 2 home runs and sport a 1.000 defensive fielding percentage. In 2022, Arroyo would play in 87 games for Low A Modesto. He would have .316/.385/.514 splits, hit 13 home runs, 7 triples and 67 RBI’s.

Traded

The Cincinnati Reds were in the midst of a rebuild in the 2022 season and had an ace pitcher set to hit the free agent market. Nick Krall would pull the trigger on one of his best moves yet; acquiring Noelvi Marte, Edwin Arroyo, Levi Stoudt and Andrew Moore in exchange for Luis Castillo. Arroyo was the Mariners number 2 prospect, as Marte was their number 1 prospect. He would play in just 27 games to finish out 2022 for the Reds in Daytona.

Reds

Edwin Arroyo would play his first season in the Reds’ organization in 2023. Between Dayton and Chattanooga, Arroyo would slash .252/.324/.433 with 13 home runs, 29 stolen bases, 60 RBI’s and 11 triples. He would make 22 errors defensively in 1008 innings innings.

Future

Edwin Arroyo would miss the entire 2024 season due to a shoulder injury that would require surgery. Arroyo profiles as a shortstop, but Elly De La Cruz is playing himself into the long term as shortstop for the Reds. He would return to play in the Arizona Fall League, slashing .253/.309/.333 in 18 games. Arroyo will most likely start the season in Double A Chattanooga, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he started in Louisville if he has an exceptional spring training. MLB.com chose Arroyo as a prospect to watch for the Reds.

I think position flexibility should be a focus for Arroyo should he continue to be a focal point for the Reds future plans, otherwise he could be a very useful trade piece to add to the teams’ list of needs, such as an outfielder. Arroyo has a lot of potential, with the Reds or not.

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
