The Cincinnati Reds have signed Free Agent outfielder and 2023 All-Star Austin Hays to a 1 year $5 million deal. In 85 games in 2024, Hays hit .256 with 5 home runs with the Phillies and Orioles. He’s a career .261/.313/.432 hitter and has decent power, he hit 22 home runs in 2021 in Baltimore. The year before they moved their fences closer to home plate.
Hays has pretty even splits vs left handed pitching and right handed pitching. .254/.304/.415 against right handed pitching. .277/.331/.469 against left handed pitching. He bas been an above average hitter for the majority of his career and I think getting him on a cheap prove it deal could work out for both the Reds and Hays.
It’s not the splash signing Reds fans were hoping for, but I think he is the best of the last 1 year outfield signings in recent years; Tommy Pham, Will Meyers etc. Hays was an All-Star in 2023, maybe a change of scenery and Great American BallPark will be a great match. Welcome to Cincinnati Austin.
