Alfredo Duno

The Cincinnati Reds signed Catcher Alfredo Duno out of Miranda, Venezuela in 2023. Duno, was paid the highest bonus for an international prospect not from Cuba for Cincinnati at $3.1 Million. Duno profiles at 6’2 and 210 pounds and played 21 games behind the plate this season. An elbow injury prohibited him from catching in the DSL in 2023, but in 45 games, Duno hit .303 with 6 home runs slashing 303/.451/.493 and showed promise with his eye for the strike zone. He struck out 41 times and walked 38 times. The Reds liked what they see in Duno, having him skip the Arizona Complex and promoting him straight to Low A Daytona. In 32 games, Duno slashed .267/.367/.422. Behind the plate, he would have a .978 fielding percentage with a 29% caught stealing percentage, league average is around 21% for minor league catchers. Unfortunately, in 2024, an injury would end Alfredo Duno’s season early. He would suffer a fractured rib on May 28th and would miss the rest of the season.

Duno is currently the Reds number 7 ranked prospect on MLB.com’s latest list. Duno has a ton of potential. He has loads of raw power and great plate awareness, but needs to limit his aggressiveness as he progresses through the ranks to become a big leaguer. The Reds currently have a need for Catchers in their farm system, so I could see Duno staying behind the plate. I wouldn’t mind seeing him get some work in the corner outfield for flexibility, but catcher suits his frame. If I were to compare him to a big league player right now, I see similarities to Salvador Perez or to Gary Sanchez. You could see Alfredo Duno on a big league roster some time near the 2028 season.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
