Ranking the Cowboys Legends

Here at “We Like Sportz” we have a tradition of releasing a series of “top 10” articles during the Thanksgiving Holiday. I’m excited to release my “Top 10 All-Time Greatest Dallas Cowboys Players”. Like we do on the holiday itself, let’s “Dive in”!

Roger “The Dodger” Staubach

1. Roger Staubach QB (1969-1979)

Staubach was Super Bowl VI MVP, 1978 NFL Man of the Year, and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Known as “Captain Comeback,” Roger Staubach was pivotal in leading the Cowboys to their early Super Bowl successes. His leadership and clutch performances under pressure are legendary. His prior military service in Vietnam shortened his career otherwise you may have found him in the “goat conversation.”

RB Emmitt Smith

2. Emmitt Smith RB (1990-2002)

The NFL’s All-Time Leading Rusher, Super Bowl XXVIII MVP, and three-time Super Bowl Champion. Smith’s durability, consistency, and record-breaking rushing yards define his career. He was crucial to the Cowboys’ offensive success during the 90s dynasty.

QB Troy Aikman

3. Troy Aikman QB (1989-2000)

Super Bowl XXVII MVP, 3 Super Bowl titles, six Pro Bowls, and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Aikman’s precision passing and leadership were central to the Cowboys’ dynasty in the early 90s. He was crucial to their championship runs.

“Mr. Cowboy” DT Bob Lilly

4. Bob Lilly DT (1961-1974)

Eleven Pro Bowls, Named to the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, and Super Bowl VI Champion. Known as “Mr. Cowboy,” Lilly is known as one of the greatest defensive tackles in NFL history. His impact on the field was monumental in both run and pass defense as the Cowboys franchise rose to the top in the 70s.

G Larry Allen

5. Larry Allen G (1994-2005)

Eleven Pro Bowls, seven First-team All-Pro selections, and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Allen’s rare combination of size, speed, and strength made him arguably the best guard in NFL history. His versatility on the offensive line was unmatched and Defensive Tackles feared matching up with him.

RB Tony Dorsett

6. Tony Dorsett RB (1977-1987)

Super Bowl XII Champion, four Pro Bowls, and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Dorsett’s electrifying runs, including an NFL Record 99-yard touchdown run, showcased his speed and agility. He played a big role in the Cowboys’ offense in the late 70s and 80s.

“The Manster” Randy White

7. Randy White DT (1975-1988)

Co-MVP of Super Bowl XII, nine Pro Bowls, Pro Football Hall of Fame. “The Manster” was known for his intense play and was a cornerstone of the “Doomsday Defense.” His versatility and ferocity made him a difficult match-up for offenses.

CB/S Mel Renfro

8. Mel Renfro CB/S (1964-1977)

Ten Pro Bowls, Super Bowl VI Champion, and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Renfro’s transition from cornerback to safety with little to no drop-off in performance was remarkable. His athleticism and coverage skills were ahead of his time. One of the best to ever play the position.

DT Harvey Martin

9. Harvey Martin DT (1973-1983)

Co-MVP of Super Bowl XII, four Pro Bowls, and 1977 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Martin is unofficially credited with a total of 114 sacks, many before the NFL made it an official stat. Martin led the Cowboys in sacks seven times during a nine-year period, with a high total of 23 in 1977. Martin has mysteriously been left out of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“The Playmaker” Michael Irvin

10. Michael Irvin WR (1988-1999)

Five Pro Bowls, three Super Bowl Championships, and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Irvin was part of the famed “Triplets” along with Aikman and Smith. His ability to make big plays in crucial moments was unmatched. He lived up to his nickname.

“America’s Team”

The Cowboys have produced countless legends over the years. Narrowing it down to 10 players is no easy task. Stats, longevity, impact, titles, and off the field impact must all be factored in. I hope you enjoy my “top 10” and I how you and your family enjoy your Thanksgiving.
