Chase Petty

Chase Petty was the 26th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft out of Mainland Regional High School, selected by the Minnesota Twins. Petty’s senior year of High School would see him pitch in 48.2 innings, striking out 99 batters, walking 19 and had an ERA of 1.15. Petty had a game in April of that season where he nearly threw a perfect game. He did throw a no-hitter and also hit a home run in that game. A lone walk would end his perfect game.

Chase Petty is the youngest brother of 3. He credits his parents Robert and Bonnie as being his biggest supporters. Chase grew up in Millville, New Jersey up until the age of 14, where the Petty family would move to Sommers Point, New Jersey. The COVID-19 virus would cancel his junior season of baseball. Chase would focus his lost season on physical training, where he would increase his fastball velocity to upwards of 102mph to go along with his slider and changeup. Chase would really put himself in the eyes of Major League scouts during his senior season in 2021. Chase would have several outings starts where he would pitch a complete 7 inning game with 2 outs or less. Command is where he would get himself into trouble. He would go on to win the Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year for 2021. Petty would commit to the University of Florida, but would opt into the draft. The Twins would select Chase Petty in the 1st round at just 18 with the 26th pick.

Chase Petty would sign with Minnesota after the draft for $2.5 million. In 2 games in rookie ball, Petty would have an ERA at 5.40 in just 5 innings. He would walk 1 and strike out 6 in those 2 appearances. In 2022, Petty would be traded to the Cincinnati Reds on March 13 for Sonny Gray and Francis Peguero. Petty would start the 2022 season in Low A Daytona in the Reds organization. Chase would pitch well in Daytona, the win/loss column wouldn’t agree, but he would have an ERA of 3.06 in 18 game (13 starts). Chase would have a batting average against him of just .233, 63 strikeouts with 24 strikeouts. Petty would be promoted to High A Dayton on July 27th and would finish the season there. He would have an ERA of 4.40 in 7 starts. He would show better command, with 33 strikeouts and just 7 walks.

2023 would see Chase begin the season on the 7 day IL. He would later be activated on May, 6th. In 16 starts, Petty would have an ERA of 1.95, 61 strikeouts and just 14 walks. Petty, while on an innings limit, would show loads of potential and would earn a promotion to AA Chattanooga on August 29th. In 2 starts, Petty would not allow a run in 8 innings with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk. So far in 2024, Petty would have a slow start to the season. Petty would have a first half stat line of 6-2, an ERA of 5.40. Overall in 2024, Chase Petty is 9-3 with a 4.65 ERA and a WHIP 1.47 with 99 strikeouts and 48 walks.

Still only just 21 years old, Chase Petty is only 3 years into his minor league journey to becoming a Major League pitcher. The most recent Reds top 30 prospects list has Chase Petty as the number 8 ranked prospect. With how he has been pitching as of late, I could see the Reds promoting him to AAA Louisville before the end of the season. If everything goes right, we could see Chase Petty pitching in Major League Baseball sometime in 2025.

That would be great! A rotation of Greene, Lowder, Burns, Lodolo and Petty would be fun

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
