The 1st round of the 2024 MLB Draft will take place on Sunday July 14th. The Cincinnati Reds hold the 2nd pick in this years draft and can add to an already deep farm system. I will lay out three scenarios for who I would take, and also who the Reds could take in this years draft.
1. Charlie Condon (Georgia)
Your 2024 Golden Spikes award winner, Charlie Condon is a 1B/3B/OF for the Georgia Bulldogs and had a phenomenal year. He would be a consensus number one overall pick if it weren’t for Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana lighting it up as well. But back to Charlie. Condon burst on to the scene with a very impressive stat line this year. His batting average of .433, 37 home runs, and 1.009 slugging percentage lead Division 1 baseball in 2024. He was also top 20 in walks.
Condon was considered undersized in high school at The Walker School in Marietta, GA, but now he stands at 6’6 216 pounds with a ton of pop in his bat. Overlooked in Charlie’s game is his defense. He’s very athletic at his size and has the versatility to play more than just first base. He has a very strong arm and could project as a corner outfielder should 1st base and 3rd base be a blocked position for the team.
The Reds need outfield depth and Charlie Condon could have a short stint in the minor leagues should he not struggle too much. If I’m Cincinnati and Charlie Condon is available I pull the trigger immediately.
2. Travis Bazzana (Oregon State)
Should Cleveland(who has the #1 pick) take Charlie Condon, Travis Bazzana is a great choice as well. Bazzana, a native Australian, played primarily 2nd base at Oregon State. Bazzana isn’t known as an elite defender at 2nd base but isn’t a liability by any means, his offense is his calling card.
Bazzana is a 5 tool prospect. Bazzana had a very impressive season in 2024. He had a batting average at .407 with 28 home runs. Bazzana slugged .659 and had an OPS at 1.156. Bazzana struck out less than he walked in each of the last 2 seasons.
Travis Bazzana is easily the number one prospect in this years draft based on the fact that he measures above average as both a hitter and a defender. Bazzana is a great athlete and could project as a center fielder should a move need be for a quicker rise through the minor league ranks. Should Cleveland look for a power threat in Charlie Condon, the Reds should pounce on Travis Bazzana.
3. Jac Caglianone (Florida)
Jac Caglianone is a wild card for me. A 2 way star at Florida, it’s unclear weather or not a team would utilize him with that skill set. The 6’5 lefty finished 2024 with a 5-2 record with 4.76 ERA. He has a fastball that can touch 100 MPH, a slider and a changeup. His offensive game is where Caglianone shines. The left handed slugger had a batting average at .419, slugging percentage at .760 and had 35 home runs.
Me personally, I would utilize Caglianone as a two way player. Why not? He has great stuff and can be developed. Yes, there’s the injury risk with a guy that throws 100 MPH, but there’s a ton of upside too. There’s only one Shohei Ohtani, but maybe, just maybe there’s room for Jac Caglianone as the next 2-way star in Major League Baseball.
Who should the Reds take in the 2024 MLB Draft? Do you take the slugging corner infielder/corner outfielder? Do you take the athletic middle infielder that hits for average with good defense? Or do you take a chance on a potential 2 way star that can throw 100 MPH and could put a ball in the Ohio River? It won’t be long and the Cincinnati Reds will be on the clock.
