GET EXCITED ABOUT THIS YANKEES PROSPECT.

A lot of fans are waiting for pitchers Chase Hampton and Will Warren to come to the Bronx. I like those two pitchers, but there is a player I am more excited to see, let me tell you a little about about him.

Trystan Vrieling #23 ranked prospect. Vrieling is 23 years old from Lewiston Idaho. He stands 6 foot 4 and weighs 200LBS the right hander has a 4 pitch mix in his repertoire. He’ll throw his fastball anywhere in the 91 to 95 mph range, it is good because he can command it to all locations of the plate. Two breaking pitches he throws both a curve and a slider, most scouts prefer his curve, a low 80s pitch with true downward action. His mid 80s slider has a 2,800 rpm range and does have some cutter appeal to it, but his changeup is the true weapon, thrown with excellent arm speed and deception. His changeup isn’t used as much as the other breaking pitches, but it definitely throws the hitters off. The only thing that hasn’t been consistent for Vrieling has been his control. Nobody is perfect; he will work on that.

Vrieling was the 100th overall pick in the 2022 draft from Gonzaga University. Vrieling had the chance to pitch for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League before transitioning from reliever to legitimate starter he finished the summer with a 2-0 record and a 1.03 ERA and 0.80 WHIP. Now a Jr. with Gonzaga, Vrieling pitched 80.2 innings and struck out 107 batters, the earned run average a little on the high side at 4.91, but like I said he’s working on that, and we’ll get to that soon.

Trystan Vrieling took the summer off, which is odd, players usually play summer ball somewhere like Vrieling had done in previous summers in the West Coast League, or the popular Cape Cod League. Confidence is there for Vrieling he knew he’d be drafted by a Major League Baseball team. So he wanted to rest up.

One would think being from the Tri-Cities, Vrieling would be a Seattle Mariners fan, not in this case.

“I’m not a die-hard Mariners fan,” he admits. “My favorite baseball team has always been the San Francisco Giants, because my dad and my brother are Dodgers fans.”

But now, the Eastern League pitcher of the week for April 15th-21st, is with the Yankees via the AA Somerset Patriots. They say you are only as good as the back of your baseball card. Well, here is his 2022 Bowman Draft 1st Edition.

Vrieling’s 2024 season has just started but things are looking bright for Trystan, he is 2-1 right now with a 1.88 ERA in 4 starts, 25K in 24 innings of work and this is the best part, hitters are only hitting .145 off of Vrieling, He’s only given up 1 long ball this year and 6 walks producing a 0.75 WHIP.

Yankees #23 prospect Trystan Vrieling throws 7.2 innings of no hit ball, striking out 6 batters and walking only 2. Vrieling threw 100 pitches during this game, he was throwing 93-95mph early on mixing in a cutter, slider and changeup. So far to start Vrieling’s career, he’s allowed just 1 run over his first 3 outings. The righthander has 18K/6BB ratio.
