Cowboys select Tyler Guyton

The Dallas Cowboys Selected Tyler Guyton in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Let’s dive into Guyton’s history and how he fits in on the Cowboys roster. Guyton celebrated from his home in Austin Texas as his dream to play for his “hometown team” came true.

Trade and Pick

Guyton, the Oklahoma Offensive Tackle, was on the Cowboys’ “short list” and isn’t a surprising pick. What was surprising is the Cowboys pulled off a trade prior to the selection dropping them from 24 to 29 where they selected Guyton. The trade with the Detroit Lions gives Dallas an additional 3rd round pick and makes up for the 4th round pick they gave to the San Francisco 49ers last season.

The Lowdown

Let’s dive into the details on Guyton and his prospective future with the Cowboys. Tyler Guyton is a 6’8″, 322-pound offensive tackle from Oklahoma. Before his time at Oklahoma, Guyton played at TCU. He was a largely unknown high school prospect but had the raw physical traits that intrigued the TCU coaching staff, leading to his recruitment. He transferred to Oklahoma from TCU after his redshirt freshman season and was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection in 2023. Guyton played his prep ball at Manor High in Texas.

College Career

Guyton only started playing football in his senior year of high school, demonstrating a rapid development in the sport. He played 10 games for OU last season, with nine starts at right tackle, showcasing his versatility on the offensive line.

Development Pick?

Despite his impressive size and athleticism, some scouts are concerned he plays too tall and could be susceptible to bull-rushes. However, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was impressed by Guyton’s athleticism and received glowing reports from the Oklahoma coaching staff. Guyton’s selection is seen as a project pick with the expectation that he will need development, particularly in terms of strength and technique. The Cowboys will attempt to develop Guyton before the fall season and don’t be shocked if he’s a starter week 1.

How it went Down

The Dallas Cowboys traded down from the 24th overall pick to the 29th, receiving the 73rd overall pick as part of the deal with the Detroit Lions. The Cowboys’ decision to select Guyton was influenced by his potential, physical attributes, and the team’s need to bolster their offensive line, especially with the departure of long-time left tackle Tyron Smith to the New York Jets.
