Thompson up, Cuas down for Cubs

Friday, the Cubs optioned righty reliver Jose Cuas to Triple-A Iowa. Keegan Thompson joined the big league team in the corresponding move. Cuas was acquired at last year’s trade deadline as the Cubs sent Nelson Valasquez to the Royals in a 1-for-1 swap. In 27 games during the 2nd half for Chicago last season, Cuas pitched 23.2 innings, compiling an 0-2 record and 3.04 ERA, but also below-average stats including a mere 19/14 K/BB ratio, 1.31 WHIP, 7.2 strikeouts per 9 innings, 5.3 walks per 9 innings and a 149 ERA+ (MLB average was approximately 100). In 5 games (6 innings) to start 2024, he had a dismal 12.00 ERA, 8 earned runs on 10 hits and a 2.00 WHIP.

debuted in 2021 and spent parts during all 3 seasons of 2021, 2022 and 2023 in Chicago while splitting between starting and relieving during his tenure with the Northsiders. In 81 games (23 starts), he’s pitched 199 innings, he’s pitched to a 3.75 ERA, 192/93 K/BB ratio, 1.32 WHIP, 8.7 K per 9 and 4.2 BB per 9. Walks have always been a bit of a problem for Thompson, likely the primary factor that’s led to his demotion to Des Moines on a few different occasions. He does, however, give the Cubs another long-relief option to work alongside Drew Smyly. As Smyly is a lefty and Thompson a righty, it gives the Cubs one of each as bullpen options to give Craig Counsell more flexibility, depending on whether they’re facing majority right-handed or left-handed lineups at certain times. Given the Cubs’ injuries to Jameson Taillon and Justin Steele, along with Kyle Hendricks struggling mightily to start the season, these long-relief roles could be valuable to team success.
