In a already disappointing season for the Toronto Raptors, things just got worse on Monday for Backup Centre Jontay Porter.
Raptors Coach Darko Rajakovic, confirmed late Monday that Porter is the subject of an NBA investigation into irregularities on prop betting involving him. Rajakovic said the allegations “caught him off guard” when he learned of the investigation before Toronto’s 96-88 loss to the Brooklyn Nets.
According to an ESPN report, a spokesperson from the NBA said the league was “looking into” bets made during Raptors games on Jan. 26 and March 20 against the Los Angeles Clippers and the Sacramento Kings, respectively.
On the eve of the Raptors game vs the Los Angeles Clippers, Porters’s player props were, 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. There was also a prop on made 3-pointers, which was 0.5.
Porter played just four minutes, after aggravating an eye injury in a previous game and scored 0 points, with 3 rebounds and an assist.
In Draft Kings daily reporting of betting statistics, the under on made 3 point shots was the highest prop bet money winner.
Another sports book detected “unusual high activity on prop bets based on Porter’s under totals, with multiple accounts placing bets of $10,000 and $24,000 respectively.
Violations of the league’s gambling policy can be punished with fines, suspensions, and even termination of contracts. If Porter is found to have bet his own unders before leaving games early, the consequences are likely to be severe.
