According to multiple sources, including my own, as well as Mary Kay Cabot, Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam are close to extending the contracts of General Manager Andrew Berry and Head Coach Kevin Stefanski.
Since buying the Cleveland Browns in 2012, the Haslam’s have gone through 6 head coaches in Pat Shurmur, Rob Chudzinski, Mike Pettine, Hue Jackson, Freddie Kitchens, and current HC Stefanski.
They’ve also had 6 different general managers in Tom Heckert, Michael Lombardi, Ray Farmer, Sashi Brown, John Doresy and now current GM Andrew Berry.
The rumored extension, which has been ongoing for weeks now, will make the GM-HC combo, one of the highest paid in the entire NFL.
This move is a welcome change to the culture of the Cleveland Browns as a whole. Keeping the top of the front office and coaching staff together, will bring a continuity to the team, that they haven’t had decades.
Before this current combo of Berry-Stefanski, the Browns haven’t had a single General Manager-Head Coach combination make it past a few seasons.
Kevin Stefanski just won his 2nd NFL Coach of the Year award this off-season in 4 years, and the players love to play for him. He’s known as a “players coach” and his often criticized “calm demeanor” that he displays on the sidelines, extends to the locker room. He’s known to be an excellent play caller (I disagree), and able to get the most out of his players.
Cleveland is 37-30 under Kevin Stefanski, in the toughest division in the NFL.
Andrew Berry became the youngest General Manager in the entire history of the NFL, when he was hired on January 20th, 2020. Berry has been able to manipulate the salary cap, to keep important players home, while being able to pay free agents to come play in Cleveland. He’s been able to find quality starting players, outside of the 1st round in the draft.
Under the Berry-Stefanski regime, the Browns have made the NFL Playoffs 2 times. In 2020 they won their Wildcard Game, against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
They ended up losing in the Divisional Round to the Kansas City Chiefs. Just this past season in 2023, they lost their Wildcard Game against the Houston Texans.
Browns fans have been screaming for stability since coming back into the league in 1999. They’re finally seeing it, and are finally have success.
It’s a wonderful thing to see.
