Luis Gil has Earned the Fifth Starter Role for the Yankees

When spring training started, the Yankees weren’t so confident that Luis Gil, would be penciled in as their fifth starter come March 28. But that has changed as of today.

When Gerritt Cole went down with a elbow injury, his pitches were alive again and his stock rose eventually winning the job. Gil’s biggest downfall is staying healthy through the season, abut as of now its all full go ahead.

He had an outstanding spring, that went way past the Yankees expectations and is the fifth starter as of now.

Gil’s main competition for the fifth starter role, was Adam Warren, who didn’t make the 40 man roster as Gil beat him out soundly.

Despite not pitching in the Major Leagues, since 2022, when Gil had Tommy John Surgery, his spring statistics this year have been very impressive, inside the Yankees organization and out, posting a ERA of 2.87 with 23 strikeouts over 15 2/3 innings.

His pitching has only up ticked since returning from elbow injury, and his fastball has been electric with lots of velocity, which has been clocked close to triple digits on the radar gun. He has refined his changeup and slider, which will keep hitters guessing, as the season starts.

The Yankees had optioned him to their Minor League Camp, once his elbow flared up. But when Cole went down with the injury, Gil was brought up for good. On the same day Cole had a MRI, he had his best outing of the spring. Going 3 2/3 innings vs the Phillies A lineup and striking out 8.

Gil’s first start in the regular season, will come next Monday vs the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

If Gil can carry over his spring starts, to the regular season, the Yankees will be in good shape until Cole returns.
