The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to part ways with a key defensive piece, trading cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans. In exchange, the Chiefs will receive a 2025 third-round pick and a swap of 2024 seventh-rounders from Tennessee, as reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Additionally, Sneed is expected to ink a new contract with the Titans upon completion of the trade.
This move comes just weeks after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII victory in February. On February 28th, Kansas City granted Sneed permission to seek a trade partner, followed by the application of the franchise tag on March 4th to prevent losing him in free agency without compensation.
Prior to the trade, Sneed earned just over $5.5 million on his rookie deal. Had he remained franchise-tagged for 2024, he would have been owed $19.8 million for the upcoming season. His eventual contract with the Titans is anticipated to be in the range of the franchise tag figure, while also providing long-term security.
The 27-year-old Sneed joins a Titans squad under new head coach Brian Callahan. He becomes the latest high-profile addition for Tennessee this offseason, following the acquisitions of quarterback Mason Rudolph, running back Tony Pollard, wide receiver Calvin Ridley, linebacker Kenneth Murray, and cornerback Chidobe Awuzie.
Throughout his four-season tenure with the Chiefs after being a fourth-round pick out of Louisiana Tech in 2020, Sneed started 67 games (including playoffs). He recorded 11 interceptions, 8.5 sacks, 23 tackles for loss, and 15 quarterback hits.
With Sneed’s departure from the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs lose a disruptive cornerback adept at containing top wide receivers. Trent McDuffie is expected to step up in the secondary, while defensive end Chris Jones, retained on a five-year deal, will anchor last season’s second-ranked defense up front.
