Week 5 gave us college football fans a lot to digest.
Conference play really kicked into high gear.
Historical offensive production.
QB’s who forgot how to complete passes to the correct team.
Defenses so bad, we wondered why the hell, they even bothered to suit up.
We all know how ESPN and the AP has their bias.
So, I am here to give you the REAL Top 25 teams in college football heading into Week 6. This week has exciting games and a big rivalry game.
FYI…..I use my own ranking in match-ups listed below.
1. Georgia Bulldogs 5-0
The defending National Champions do not look as explosive as last season. That being said, they are finding ways to win. Let’s be honest, when you have TE Brock Bowers on your team, you just let the man carry the team when you need it.
Up next #18 Kentucky
2. Michigan Wolverines 5-0
The 2-time defending B10 Champions are dominating on the offensive side of the ball. They have a possible first round QB, two NFL caliber HBs, and WR Roman Wilson is a player.
Up next at Minnesota
3. Washington Huskies 5-0
Yes. You read that right. I have them as my third best team in the country. QB Michael Penix Jr is a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender. The Huskies have two NFL caliber WRs and can outscore any team, anytime, anywhere.
Up next at #5 Oregon in two weeks.
4. Ohio State Buckeyes 4-0
QB Kyle McCord has improved the last two weeks after being named the starter. The Buckeyes have two guaranteed, first round WRs in Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka. Also Ohio State has a first round DE in JT Tuimoloau and another possibly first rounder with CB Denzel Burke. They have all the talent. They just need to play up to their potential.
Up next #24 Maryland
5. Oregon Ducks 5-0
QB Bo Nix has been on fire this season. He’s completing 84.4% of his passes with 15 TDs with only 1 INT. The Ducks defense has improved immensely which has led them to a point differential of +199.
Up next #3 Washington in two weeks
6. Texas Longhorns 5-0
QB Quinn Ewers is healthy and not turning the ball over. WR Xavier Worthy has elite level speed and requires double teams. HB Johathon Brooks is toting the rock almost as good as Bijan did last season.
Up next #11 Oklahoma in Dallas
7. USC Trojans 5-0
Reigning Heisman Trophy winning QB Caleb Williams is picking up where he left off last season by making plays and winning games. At the same time, their defense is doing the same thing they did last season, not stopping anybody. Up next Arizona
8. Florida State Seminoles 4-0
QB Jordan Travis is getting the ball to his play making WRs Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman. When the ball is in their hands, anything can happen. Future Top 10 draft pick DE Jared Verse leads an improved defense so far this season.
Up next Virginia Tech
9. Penn State Nittany Lions 5-0
They have a two-prong running attack with Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, so QB Drew Allar just needs to continue to not turn it over. Their defense has 20 sacks through 5 games, so they’re getting pressure on opposing QBs constantly.
Up next UMass in two weeks
10. Alabama Crimson Tide 4-1
Don’t look now, but Saban has his team back inside the Top 10. Jalen Milroe is the starting QB going forward. His running ability is the shot in the arm, this offense needs. LB Dallas Turner has 5.5 sacks through 5 games, to go along with two forced fumbles. You have to account for him. Period.
Up next at Texas A&M
11. Oklahoma Sooners 5-0
When QB Dillon Gabriel is healthy, he arguably one of the best in the country. He has 15 TDs and only 2 INTs. He distributes the ball equally, so defenses can’t target one man. As long as he’s on the field, the Sooners are in every game.
Up next #6 Texas in Dallas
12. North Carolina Tar Heels 4-0
Future Top 5 pick, QB Drake Maye hasn’t played his best this season, but sophomore HB Omarian Hampton has picked up the slack. The whole team has been opportunistic and making the right plays, at the right time.
Up next Syracuse
13. Oregon State Beavers 4-1
The Beavers play ball control football. They keep the opposing team’s offense on the sideline with a good running game and tough offensive line. QB DJ Uiagalelei does need to improve if they want win the conference.
Up next at Cal
14. Ole Miss Rebels 4-1
QB Jaxson Dart has three WRs that he can throw to in Jordan Watkins, Dayton Wade and Tre Harris. Dart can also run the ball good enough to make teams think twice before blitzing.
Up next Arkansas
15. Notre Dame Fighting Irish 5-1
QB Sam Hartman has transformed this offense. He has 14 TDs and 0 INTs. That’s right. No interceptions through six games. Of course, it helps to have one of the best offensive lines in the entire country blocking for you. That same line has helped HB Audric Estime emerge as one of the best in college football.
Up next at #23 Louisville
16. Washington State Cougars 4-0
QB Cam Ward doesn’t get enough credit. He makes this Cougars offense go. They have three WRs that have over 300 yards receiving on the season, in Lincoln Victor, Josh Kelly, and Kyle Williams. The 12 TDs between them prove they can score at any time.
Up next at UCLA
17. LSU Tigers 3-2
QB Jayden Daniels has full control of Brian Kelly’s offense. Daniels has over 1,700 yards passing with 16 TDs and only 2 INTs. He has an additional 3 TDs on the ground. WR Malik Nabers is a potential first round pick with dynamic speed with the numbers to back it up. 40 catches for 625 yards and 5 TDs. They’re defense is what has cost them 2 games.
Up next at #25 Missouri
18. Kentucky Wildcats 5-0
Coming into the season, all the talk was about transfer QB Devin Leary. He’s done a serviceable job managing the offense. The big reason for the fast start, is transfer HB Ray Davis. He’s averaging a sizable 7.8 YPC and 8 TDs.
Up next at #1 Georgia
19. Utah Utes 4-1
The absence of starting QB Cam Rising has been devastating for them. However, Freshman QB Nate Johnson has done his best to keep things afloat while gaining valuable experience. DE Jonah Elliss has 7.5 sacks already this season.
Up next Cal in two weeks
20. Tennessee Volunteers 4-1
QB Joe Milton has been fairly good (9 TDs to 3 INTs) replacing Hendon Hooker. It’s been the Tennessee running game that’s been a nice surprise in 2023. Three HBs are averaging 6.0 YPC or more. Add on that Milton’s own running ability and the Volunteers 13 TDs on the ground. The defense has 22 sacks, to help balance the scales.
Up next Texas A&M in two weeks
21. Miami Hurricanes 4-0
QB Trevor Van Dyke is playing well after a terrible season in 2022, with 11 TDs to only 1 INT on the year. They got a big win in Week 2 and have had cupcakes the other three games. If the running game can get going, they might make a bit of noise later in the ACC schedule.
Up next Georgia Tech
22. Duke Blue Devils 4-1
This is very simple. The injury to QB Riley Leonard (high ankle sprain), just plain sucks for Duke. Luckily, they have a bye this week. They need to do whatever to get him healthy. The meat of their ACC schedule starts in two weeks. If he can’t play, they ain’t winning. Yes, it’s that simple.
Up next NC State in two weeks
23. Louisville Cardinals 5-0
Transfer QB Jack Plummer had a horrible game on Saturday. Other than that, he’s been just OK (11 TDs and 6 INTs). It’s been big plays from HB Jawhar Jordan (66 carries for 510 yards with 6 TDs) and WR Jamari Thrash (22 catches for 444 yards with 5 TDs), that is carrying this offense and this record.
Up next #15 Notre Dame
24. Maryland Terrapins 5-0
QB Taulia Tagovailoa has done a great job spreading the ball around and limiting turnovers (13 TDs and 3 INTs). This defense though has 8 INTs on the season. They are getting turnovers and giving their offense more time. They get their first real test on Saturday in Columbus.
Up next at #4 Ohio State
25. Missouri Tigers 5-0
QB Brady Cook has 0 INTs. Pair that with his 11 TD passes, and that’s a great combo. His #1 target is WR Luther Burden, who has 43 catches for 644 yards and 5 TDs. Missouri only need to step up on defense and have one other offensive person become a major contributor, and they could shock a few teams in the SEC. Up next #17 LSU
