Meet Up With Pirates Superfan Saxboy

One of the things I enjoy the most is enthusiastic brewers fans. Although I have yet to personally meet the Brewers superfans out there, I have come across a Pittsburgh Pirates superfan. I had the opportunity to meet and enjoy a game with him when the Pirates came to Milwaukee.

Meet Saxboy, the fun-loving Pittsburgh Pirates super fan is a local Pittsburgh legend. He creates videos and cool content fueled by his passion for the Pirates. His content also includes general Pittsburgh shenanigans and biking!

I found this hidden gem while watching a silly Barstool show called The Yak where Saxboy called in to the show as The Yak crew was curious about his top 100 personalities in Pittsburgh Pirates media.

A little background on Saxboy he started on early Vine, loved to make content, lived and taught in Mongolia for a year in 2023. He is back living in Pittsburgh and investing his life and energy into the Pittsburgh Pirates. His vision is to be a full-time content creator. He has been figuring out how to monetize and create opportunities to support his vision. At the moment, he has an online Pirates vintage thrift-shop and is working on launching a podcast!

At the game I got to spend some time and ask him a few questions at American Family Field while enjoying game 3 of the Brewers, Pirates series. He has a goal this season to travel with the team and make fun content by exploring the cities he visits, giving ballpark reviews, traveling with his companion: a Mitch Keller Jedi bobblehead. This was the first trip on his journey to follow the Pirates on the road.

He took the three days to wander around and explore our beautiful city of Milwaukee. He enjoyed meandering down the lakefront, visiting the National Bobblehead Museum, and giving reviews for several local restaurants. I had a beer with him after the game at the lovely baseball themed spot Broken Bat Brewery. Let me rephrase that, I had a beer, Saxboy is sober so he did a taste test of Broken Bat’s very own non-alcoholic juices called Off-Speed with flavors passion fruit and tangerine. Saxboy enjoyed both of them and highly recommended the passion fruit flavor! Fun fact, Joey Wiemer was a guest bartender there last season and yes I was present.

The Brew Crew won 2-10. The Crew had 5 home runs, two of them hit by our rookies. As the Brewers rained home runs upon the Pirates, Saxboy gave a brat review. He very much enjoyed the Johnsonville Ultimate Bratwurst. I had to correct him on the brat’s type of cheese, can’t believe bro didn’t know what swiss cheese looked like. Homie was hilariously doing the sad slouch watching the pirates get absolutely pummeled. After the game we walked up from our seats to see a group of teenagers in Pirates gear waiting to take a picture with Saxboy and chat with him. It was a fun thing to see!

On the stroll out of the stadium we discussed how to grow yourself online and building a brand of yourself, nobody’s going to advertise you as much as yourself. He mentioned the term “micro-niche” as a way to stand out on X(Twitter) is to narrow your brand down to a very specific topic. It was a cool discussion as we are trying to build our own brand here at We Like Sportz.

We agreed that we like to make sports fun! We discussed how a lot of big corporate sports journalists take themselves too seriously and we just want to enjoy them and have a good time. The way I like to write is to make sports culture an awesome, welcoming, fun place to be, and to not to look down on others who may have never played or don’t know as much. Saxboy and us here at We Like Sportz are doing just that!

The last question I asked him as I was dropping him off at the airport was, “where exactly IS Pittsburgh?” I genuinely didn’t know. Saxboy just stared at me in disbelief. He made a video of me guessing what state Pittsburgh is in, my first answer being Ohio, which is NOT FAR OFF. To my defense, since I’ve been a baseball fan the Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t really done much haha!
