Women in Baseball Part 4; International Flavor

Women in baseball is not only about the rich history as we looked at in the first part of our week long set of articles. It is not just about the modern women who are currently holding or have previously held positions of power within baseball. There is also more to the modern woman in baseball than what lies within the borders of the United States. There are many great talents who call themselves women, and do so in International lands.

6’2” Australian left handed pitcher Genevieve Beacom, was the First woman to play in ABL, Genevieve made history on Jan. 8th 2022, when at 17 years old she took to the mound for the Melbourne Aces, becoming the first female player in the league’s history. Genevieve threw a scoreless sixth inning for Melbourne against the Adelaide Giants. The lefty delivers pitches to the mound at a speed up to the mid 80s and has a 12-6 curveball.

Could Beacom be the first female pitcher in MLB. I think it could be possible. We’ll see I guess.

French teenager Melissa Mayeux was the first ever woman on the MLB international registration list in 2015 at 16 years old, she is a shortstop from France. Like Maria Pepe from a previous article, Melissa successfully got a “no girls allowed” rule abolished so she could keep playing baseball with French boys.

Mayeux plays for the French junior national team in baseball and the national softball team, with other women at a senior level. Inequality in sports remains so common that it is often overlooked until athletes like Mayeux remind people of the obstacles women still face. Melissa dreams of being a big leaguer ball player someday. She was quoted;

“I think there are people who oppose the idea of a girl being signed as a pro one day,” she said. “But they’ve never seen me play, they don’t know me. I hope I can change their mind.” All I want is to play at the highest level I can.”

I hope you have enjoyed reading these series of four articles as much as I enjoyed writing and researching them. A topic that I thought I do justice with in one article blossomed into so many women in baseball that it took me four articles to complete. If you may have missed one of the other three articles, here are the links to the first article, the second article and the third article. Cheers to these women for knocking down doors and breaking through glass ceilings as women in baseball continue to evolve and grow in a positive way.
