The Top 3 Needs For The Washington Commanders Ahead of The 2024 NFL Draft

The 2024 NFL Draft is this Thursday. Although I am excited to watch the entire draft, I am intrigued to see how the Washington Commanders can reshape their team as they have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds. When you have this many high picks in one draft, the whole “best athlete available” theory goes out the window for me. Washington needs to identify their weaknesses, and target specific players who can fill those areas of need. Therefore, I have written 2 articles that will hopefully give the fans some insight into how this process takes place by first identifying those areas of need, in this article. Then tomorrow, have a second article that gives those needs a face from the 2024 NFL Draft.

I am actually going to start this article out with my Honorable Mention selection. Wide Receiver. With Curtis Samuel leaving the Commanders in free agency, the Commanders are in desperate need of another weapon for either Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye. Pairing together another dangerous wideout with an always elite Terry McLaurin and the electric Jahan Dotson (who I wrote an article about earlier this week you can read right here) would upgrade this offense even more.

  1. Quarterback. This will come as no surprise to anyone. The Commanders made the choice to close the Sam Howell chapter, dishing him to the Seattle Seahawks in the offseason. Holding the #2 pick this year it really is between Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye to take reign of this franchise.
  1. Tackle. One of the biggest critiques last offseason was how weak the Offensive Line would perform. Washington made a slight effort to upgrade it, signing Andrew Wylie from the Chiefs to play the tackle spot. Unfortunately it was a complete disaster and resulted in one of the worst performing offensive lines in the league.
  1. Corner. One of if not the worst performing area of the Commanders was the secondary. Losing Kendall Fuller and Kam Curl in free agency has not done the Commanders any favors. With the current top cornerbacks on our depth chart being Benjamin St Juste, Emmanuel Forbes, and Quan Martin, upgrades are needed badly.

Those are my 3 greatest areas of weakness on the Commanders, with a bonus honorable mention thrown in. Do you agree? Do you disagree? Do you think the needs are right, just in the wrong order? Let me know what you think in the comments below, and look forward to who I will select to fill these needs in my follow-up article.
