Who will be the better day 1 starter Drake Or Daniels?

As always in the NFL, the day after the Super Bowl the league turns to the free agency period and most importantly, the draft. However, in DC, this year feels very different than other years. Holding 6 picks inside the top 100 of this year’s NFL draft, DC fans are at war over who to pick. While there is debate about every pick and selection the Commanders have, the biggest of them all is who will be taken at #2.

Caleb Williams is almost 100% going to be off the board at #1 to Chicago.

This brings up the burning question in DC, Maye or Daniels? This question has split the fanbase nearly in half over who the correct pick is. It is completely fair for the DC fanbase to over analyze and over judge both these QB prospects due to past failures at QB. The fans, and most importantly the franchise is ready for a solid perennial Quarterback to lead this team to success. If you asked 100 random Commander fans Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye, you’d probably get a close to 50/50 split for a number of reasons.

As a fan who has seen plenty of reasoning for both, I’d like to share what I think separates Maye from Daniels and vice versa. There are lots of pros and cons for each and both in my opinion are very raw prospects with super high ceilings.

One of the biggest questions people are asking is who is a better day 1 starter. In my personal opinion I believe if you had to pick between Maye and Daniels to make a solid case as a solid starting qb in their rookie year I’d personally say Jayden Daniels is more ready. I personally think that Maye will just not see the same success in his rookie year as Daniels would. This has to do with a number of factors regarding the team they are surrounded by as well as the extreme adjustment from college level to the NFL. I think the jump from college to NFL will be easier for Daniels than Maye. While both play in Power 5 Conferences, I think Jayden Daniels has had more exposure and game time against better players and teams than Drake Maye has.

While I explained why I think Jayden Daniels is a better day 1 starter, I do personally feel Drake Maye’s ceiling might be higher. I think giving Maye time and less pressure to get adjusted to the pace of the NFL would benefit him a lot more and eventually turn him into a franchise QB. He has the size and frame and solid speed to succeed.

It is nearly impossible to predict, out of Maye and Daniels who will end up being the better quarterback. Both have lots of stats to support them and Jayden Daniels coming off a Heisman season is commonly a sign that you are destined for success. You have to factor in so many small and large details to get a grasp of what will happen but at the end of the day you never know until you see it. The jump from college level to the NFL is incredibly important especially for a new quarterback and it takes a different amount of time for players to adjust.
