Notre Dame Displays Talent in Spring Game

South Bend, Indiana – The annual Notre Dame Blue-Gold game took place at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, featuring an exciting glimpse into the future of the Fighting Irish. The Blue team emerged victorious with a 28-21 score over the Gold team.

Angeli Shines

The game was marked by a strong showing from the Blue team’s offense, with quarterback Steve Angeli leading the way. Angeli, who led the Irish to last season’s Sun Bowl victory, showcased his skills with two touchdown passes, one to Eli Raridon and another to Aneyas Williams. The Blue team’s offensive success was also aided by a 62-yard touchdown catch by Kris Mitchell, which proved to be one of the game’s big moments. Presumed starter, Riley Leonard has been practicing (post surgery) but did not suite up for the game.

Defense Creates

On the defensive side, the game saw the Blue squad secure three takeaways, which were crucial in securing the win. The Irish were the Nation’s number two ranked defense last season and looked confident on the field today. Star defender Benjamin Morrison did not suite up for the game, which allowed younger players to get some valuable playing time.

Coach Freeman Pleased

Head coach Marcus Freeman expressed his satisfaction with the overall performance of the quarterbacks and the team as a whole. “I was really pleased overall, the entire spring, of what all three of those guys have done,” Freeman told NBC/Peacock.

Notable Game Stats

Quarterback Steve Angeli completed 17 of 25 passes for 228 yards and 2 touchdowns. Kenny Minchey also contributed with 12 of 19 passes completed for 123 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception, along with 6 rushes for 40 yards and a touchdown. CJ Carr completed 15 of 23 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown. True Freshman WR Micah Gilbert caught two touchdowns from two different Quarterbacks.

Game Well Attended

The game was attended by over 37,000 fans, marking the highest attendance for the annual spring game since 2007 (51,852).

Momentum For The Fall

The Blue-Gold Game provided a taste of what’s to come in the near future for Notre Dame football. The Irish are on an upward trajectory after last season’s 10 wins (including the Sun Bowl). The Irish will begin the 2024 season with a challenging game against Texas A&M on August 31. The Irish look to make a strong case for a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff next season.
