The Maple Leafs playoff struggles continued in Game 1 of this year’s playoffs. The mighty Bruins pummeled the Leafs 5-1. Jeremy Swayman remains perfect against the Toronto Maple Leafs this season. The Bruins goalie made 35 saves with his 5-1 victory in Game 1 win Saturday.
The Leafs outshot the Bruins 36-24 but that’s about where the puck stopped literally. The Bruins tallied 5 goals, 2 goals from forward Jake DeBrusk, assists coming from Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy, defenseman Brandon Carlo scored on an assist from Jake DeBrusk and line-mate Hampus Lindholm. Trent Fedric also scored with an assist from Bruins star forward David Pastrnak, and even rookie John Beecher got on the scoresheet, with assists from Jesper Boqvist and Pat Maroon. Bruins were 2 for 5 on the powerplay.
Toronto’s lone goal came from an unlikely source fourth liner David Kampf, assistance on the play came from Connor Dewar and the Leafs enforcer Ryan Reaves. Toronto did have 3 chances on the powerplay but failed to produce. All of Toronto’s stars Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and captain John Tavares were basically invisible on the ice tonight.
The Maple Leafs turned the puck over 12 times, that definitely didn’t help their chances in this game. Careless plays and unnecessary penalties will cost almost any team the game, and when you are playing a team the caliber of the Bruins, you need to be extra cautious in the neutral zone or your own end.
Can Toronto bounce back in Game 2? Its anybody’s guess. I believe Coach Sheldon Keefe will mix things up a bit, and also go with Joseph Woll in Game 2. Monday night could seal the Leafs’ fate or show the Bruins they mean business with some solid play and not so careless plays. LETS GO TORONTO LETS GO !!!
