McIlroy to Liv…Or So We Thought

When I saw this news the first time I was utterly shocked. The guy who despises and criticizes LIV Golf all the time is signing an $850 million dollar mega deal with them? These rumors ended up being false but let’s talk about the short period of time where the golf world believed this was real and would happen. Rory is a great player and I am in the minority that likes Rory as a person and as a golfer. Rory has been a great player his whole career but he has been slowing down a lot lately.

His Recent Play

McIlroy’s last major was the 2014 PGA Championship. He was 25 at the time and he is 34 now, so it has been a very long time. He won 4 majors from 2011-2014 and he looked like the next face of golf. He has struggled since those years and especially now it seems that everything is going down hill for Rory. His last win was the 2024 Hero Dubai classic but his game just does not seem as sharp as guys like Jon Rahm or Scottie Scheffler who are some of the guys considered top players currently.

Who Started This?

There was a London newspaper by the name of City A.M. that said he was going to sign an $850 million dollar contract with LIV and get a 2% equity stake. He spoke to the Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis at the RBC Heritage event on Tuesday and said that this was a false rumor. He went as far as saying he was PGA for life. Rory is a spokesperson for the PGA Tour so it would have been crazy if this was true and would have happened. The craziest thing about it is it all happened so fast that it put the golf world in a frenzy.

Could This Actually Have Benefited the PGA?

My opinion on this whole situation is it would have been crazy if it would have happened. But, believe it or not there may have been benefits. It is not good for the game of golf to not have the best players in the world competing against each other every week. If McIlroy would have signed this deal it would have maybe united the PGA Tour and LIV and made them sign a contract to combine these leagues. The downside of this contract, if it would have been signed, is the fact that if Rory has a price to go to LIV. If that was the case, then every player would then have a price to go to LIV and we may have witnessed more and more stars going to LIV. All in all I believe that it was crazy but kind of fun to think that Rory McIlroy was going to LIV golf for a short amount of time.
