Arlington, Texas – In a heart-stopping NFC East showdown the Dallas Cowboys outlasted the New York Giants 40-37 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Stadium, extending their dominance over the Giants to nine straight wins (14 straight for Dak Prescott). The victory, capped by kicker Brandon Aubrey‘s game-winning 46-yard field goal as time expired in OT, marked the first victory for new head coach Brian Schottenheimer and provided a much-needed bounce-back win after Dallas’ Week 1 loss.

Offensive Firepower

The game was a back and forth battle with 6 lead changes. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott orchestrated the 4th-Quarter comeback with poise, completing 38 of 52 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns, including a clutch scoring strike to newly acquired wideout George Pickens for his first Dallas TD. Prescott’s heroics improved his personal winning streak against the Giants to an impressive 14 straight dating back to his rookie year in 2016. On the other side, Russell Wilson was amazing in his second start under center for New York, torching the Cowboys secondary for 450 passing yards (just two shy of his career high) on 30-of-41 passing with three touchdowns. Wilson’s deep ball connected with WR Malik Nabers for 167 yards, including a pair of scores, but a costly interception by safety Donovan Wilson on an ill-advised overtime moon-ball sealed the Giants’ fate.

Flags Flying

The contest was a penalty-riddled rollercoaster from the beginning, with both teams combining for 26 infractions totaling 266 yards. New York’s 14 penalties for 160 yards shattered a franchise record set back in 1947, highlighted by backup left tackle James Hudson III‘s four flags on the opening drive alone, which turned a potential touchdown into a mere field goal despite 110 yards of total offense in the drive. Dallas was just as sloppy, racking up 12 penalties for 106 yards, but overcame them in the end.

Cowboys Comeback

The Giants took a late 37-34 lead with a TD toss from Wilson to Malik Nabers. With just 25 seconds to work with, Prescott worked his magic getting Dallas set up for Aubrey’s franchise-record-tying 64-yard field goal as regulation ticked to zero. The Cowboys’ defense finally stepped up in OT. After trading punts and a Dallas drive derailed by drops and flags, Wilson’s backward throw for a 14-yard loss and subsequent interception handed the Cowboys prime field position. Wilson’s pick at the Dallas 30, under rare pressure from a collapsing pocket, gifted Prescott the ball back with two minutes left. A 27-yard pass to Pickens and a 14-yard scramble set up Aubrey’s heroics, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

Running Downhill

Amidst all the high powered passing on both sides, the Cowboys found a running game as well. Javonte Williams has emerged as the Cowboys’ workhorse, well complemented by Miles Sanders. Williams finished with 18 carries for 97 yards including a 30-yard touchdown run. Sanders filled in well with 5 carries for 15 yards including a 4-yard touchdown. Dak Prescott set up the winning FG with a 14 yard run of his own.

On To Week 3

Coach Schottenheimer called it “a total team win – offense, defense, special teams. That’s the standard we’re building.” Prescott echoed the sentiment: “We found a way. That’s all that matters in this league.” The Cowboys head to Chicago, where the 0-2 Bears look to regroup at home.

The Cowboys (1-1), head to Chicago riding high but with injury concerns: Wide returner KaVontae Turpin exited with a neck issue in the third quarter, and center Cooper Beebe sat with an ankle tweak. Deron Bland sat with an injured ankle and was obviously missed. The Cowboys will re-evaluate all 3 in hopes to see them in the field in week 3. Beebe’s ankle appears to be the dreaded “high ankle sprain” which may take up to 4-6 weeks. Brock Hoffman may step in at center in the meantime.

New York heads into their home opener against Kansas City next Sunday with both teams desperate for a win.

Cowboys Sign Jadeveon Clowney

In a postgame announcement that could reshape Dallas’ defensive front, owner Jerry Jones announced the signing of three-time Pro aBowl defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million, with incentives pushing it to $6 million. The move comes just weeks after the Cowboys traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to Green Bay. Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in 2014 out of South Carolina, visited Dallas last week and was spotted in the stands Sunday, fresh off a 5.5-sack, 46-tackle season with the Carolina Panthers before his May release.

“He’s been an outstanding player; he’ll add some real depth,” Jones told reporters. “He’s very credible. He’ll help us.” The 32-year-old veteran, who boasts 58 career sacks across stints with Houston, Seattle, Tennessee, Cleveland, Baltimore, and Carolina, brings versatility against both the pass and run. Clowney could debut as soon as next week’s matchup, providing an immediate boost to a defense that allowed Russell Wilson to walk his team down the field with ease in week 2.
