Offseason Inactivity Inexcusable

When the Lakers acquired Luka Doncic, it was expected they would do everything that they could to position themselves with a fighters’ chance, after going out in 5 against the Timberwolves in Round 1.

Well, so far the Lakers have spent $12 million on Jake LaRavia to replace Dorian Finney Smith. They acquired DeAndre Ayton after a buyout, and resigned Jaxson Hayes. Keep in mind, that the Playoffs showed the Lakers needed a center, so getting Ayton is a plus. However, with all the reports of the Lakers holding off on multi-year deals for cap space, leaves a lot of people in the industry and their fans scratching their heads.

I know most fans also dont want to hear this, but the League values players differently than fans do. Most of the time, fans think the players on their teams have a lot of value, especially if their a starter, and that just isn’t the case.

Rui Hachimura is a capable starter who gives you a consistent 14 points a night, but his defense and basketball IQ itself has been questioned by fans and scouts of other teams.

When the Lakers engaged with the Miami Heat about acquiring Andrew Wiggins. It was reported that Miami wanted not only Rui but 2024 1st round pick Dalton Knecht and an extra 1st.

The Lakers obviously grew frustrated with the price point and stopped negotiating. That doesn’t mean they won’t revisit it, it just shows what other teams are doing with their negotiations and the Lakers asset cup board is growing more and more slim.

The only asset teams really deem a positive is Austin Reaves and the Lakers already have set a high bargain if they were to give him up. The problem with that is not only are most teams weary of trading for him. He is set to be a free agent next year, and his defense is also subpar. He doesnt seemingly match well with Luka on that end of the court.

I still expext the Lakers to make a trade before next season but I would warn Lakers fans to not expect a miracle to compete with OKC or Houston or even the Nuggets next season.
