The Cincinnati Reds have designated INF Jeimer Candelario for assignment. Candelario has heavily underperformed since his signing with the Reds in 2024.

In 2024, Jeimer would slash .225/.279/.429. He would hit under .200 until May. For the month of May, he would slightly warm up but June 2024 was his best month overall for the Reds. He would slash .290/.302/.591 with 8 home runs. Injuries derailed 2024, he played through a knee injury and later would be sidelined for the majority of the season with a toe fracture.

2025 has been a nightmare for Candelario. In 80 at bats, he’s hitting just .113 with a .411 OPS. He’s a -0.9 WAR and an 11OPS+. An absolute disaster of a season. This video sums up this season for him.

This is the second consecutive major signing the Reds have DFA’d prematurely due to bad performance. Mike Moustakas was signed to 4 year $64 million in 2019 and was DFA’d in 2023. Moustakas never had double digit home runs in his time with the Reds after multiple 20-35 home runs seasons before signing.

This is becoming a reoccurring theme with the Reds. They sign aging “power” hitters who are past their prime. If you’re going to spend high level draft capital on pitching, you need to hit on free agent hitters and that’s something the Reds have struggled with for a very long time.

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
