On Sunday May 11th after a 9-3 win over the Padres the Rockies made the decision to fire manager Bud Black while also firing bench coach Mike Remond. The Rockies had been recently in the national media breaking a National League record of the worst start since 1901 through 28 games going 4-24. The writing was on the wall for the organization to eventually move on from manager Bud Black after an abysmal start with a team record (8-40) currently.

Bud Black in my opinion was just another scape goat for this Rockies organization’s dysfunction. Owner Dick Montfort needs to really do some self-reflecting and pose the question “Am I really serious about winning?” Let me answer that question for him, Uh No! Monfort had fired Jeff Bridich in 2021, also has moved on from hitting coaches, bench coaches and now moved on from manager Bud Black. I like the saying if you ever have heard of it, “When you point the finger there is 3 pointing back at you”, hence where is the accountability for Monfort?
Signing talent in free agency is a focal part of roster building aside from the MLB draft and trades. Monfort’s unwillingness as an owner to spend in free agency is crystal clear and has been a detriment to this team’s success. According to spotrac.com This offseason in free agency the Rockies spent a combined 15,750,000 in contract value on 5 players. In the 2024 offseason they spent 9,200,000 combined in contract value on 2 players. To me that doesn’t scream that the Rockies are serious about winning when you see the type of contracts being handed out and the type of players being signed to organizations that are in the same tier as the Rockies are in terms of small markets.

Yes, the Rockies have young talent in players like center fielder Brenton Doyle, shortstop Eziquiel Tovar and pitcher Chase Dollander to name a few, but let’s help these guys by surrounding them with other talented players and not waste their careers in Colorado either. It’s frustrating to see such talented players come through Colorado to be developed and then shortly after, seeing them get traded and be another organization’s treasure. It feels as if though we are the MLB’s farm system for all the other organizations in the league.
Denver is a phenomenal sports town that has high standards with teams like the Broncos, Nuggets, and Avalanche that have won a championship or in some cases multiple. Rockies fans deserve the opportunity to be mentioned one day in that list of teams that have won a championship, or multiple. I know the fans love their team because no matter how underwhelming they perform, the fans have been continuing to show out. Until either Monfort decides he is serious about winning or sells the team, winning a World Series title is just a dream that may never come true.
