When the Cubs traded for Kyle Tucker from the Astros, it was thought that he would make it easier on the whole offense. Since April 9th however, Tucker has struggled a little and you see that whenever he misses a pitch he knows he can crush with all the broken wood from his bat slamming the ground. There is another man on the team that is stepping his game up.

PCA is Heating Up

Coming into the year, Cubs fans had mixed opinions on PCA. He is extremely fast and possesses elite defensive, which always will give him a high floor, but his offense was always a question where it would lie.

He reads the ball extremely well off the opponents bat and is always giving 110% out in center, and with that elite speed, he makes the hard plays look routine. On the year, PCA is doing this at the plate .290/.325/.585/150 wRC+. That is on pace for one of the best offensive performances this year. With that elite speed and defense in check, it was just his offensive game that had to grow to make those other areas much more valuable and he has.

His 3.0 WAR is leading the NL and only trails Aaron Judge and with the energy he brings to the team as well it’s hard not to make a case for him getting some MVP talk though it is extremely hard to top Ohtani these days.

The Cubs tried to extend him at $75 million with $40 million guaranteed. With the season he is having he is in line with what Jackson Merrill got from the Padres at $135 million. He has done such a good job that Craig Counsell selected him to replace Happ in the leadoff spot when he went down with injury. His speed on the bases is also a plus. He has stolen 14 bases this year without getting caught and that type of chaos creates runs.In the grand scheme of things he will struggle again at some point but right now Cubs fans are basking in seeing a young player come into his own.
