In the late afternoon on Tuesday, while the Cincinnati Reds were in Dayton to play against the prospects, it was announced that outfielder Austin Hays was dealing with a calf injury. While unclear how severe it may be, the team is taking no chances. It was announced on Wednesday that Hays will be placed on the IL, and the team will reverse its decision on the status of Spencer Steer, making him active and the team’s designated hitter while he’s dealing with his shoulder injury. With this move the team also announced that outfielder Stuart Fairchild will be Designated for Assignment, clearing the final roster spots for Blake Dunn and Jacob Hurtubise.

While the injuries are concerning, I don’t believe they are detrimental to the outcome of the season. Dunn and Hurtubise provide a different dynamic to the outfield that I don’t believe Fairchild provided offensively, but Stuart is a better defender. It is very likely that Fairchild clears waivers and will be assigned to Louisville due to the timing of the announcement. The 2025 season begins tomorrow, and the Reds look to get off to a good start.
