The Cincinnati Reds have made some key decisions on Thursday March 20th, 2025. They announced that starting pitcher Andrew Abbott will begin the season on the IL, naming right handed Carson Spiers the 5th starter to begin the season.

Spiers was a reliable pitcher for most of the 2024 season. In May and June, Spiers made 7 starts and had an ERA under 4 going 2-1 in those starts. He was used more than he probably should have been. Post All-Star game, he would go 2-5 with a 7.21 ERA. So far this spring, he’s 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA along with 10 strikeouts in 10 innings. With Carson training as a starter and building up the reps, he could be a reliable 5th starter for the time being. Good news for the Reds: they have Abbott coming back, and they have some really great pitching talent starting the year in AAA and coming soon in Chase Petty, Rhett Lowder, and Chase Burns.

The Reds also announced that they have signed Catcher Jose Trevino to a 3-year contract worth $15 million with a club option for a 4th via Jon Heyman. Trevino will be thrust into the primary catcher role to begin the season, with Tyler Stephenson starting the season on the IL with an oblique strain. Trevino is a career .236 hitter with 32 home runs. He’s a career 3.7 WAR and is a Gold Glove and Platinum Glove award winner.

I really like this signing for the Reds. The Reds have ZERO reliable catching depth other than Austin Wynns. Their Minor League depth is nowhere near ready and the only prospect that is showing signs of improvement is Alfredo Duno, and he is a few years away. When Stephenson comes back the Reds will have 2 solid Major League catching options. There was a scare about a week ago when Trevino was struck in the hand by a foul tip and was removed from the game on the same day Stephenson was placed on the IL.
