Surprise Surprise Giancarlo Stanton is hurt… D.J LeMehieu as well. Yankees have a lot more options to replace these guys as far as hitters go than the plethora of injuries to the pitchers?
The Yankees will be without one of their top pitchers of the starting rotation for a while. After suffering a lat strain during a bullpen session last week, Luis Gil is expected to miss at least 3 months, which includes 6 weeks without throwing. Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA, 171 K, 77 walks and a 1.19 WHIP in 151.2 IP through 29 starts. This is a huge blow to the Yankees who are vying to get back to the playoffs and hopefully make a World Series run again.
Clarke Schmidt (stiff back) is ailing not in the way of Gil or my next guy up or should i say down…
Yankees ace, yes he is aging almost 35 but he has been the Yankees best pitcher for a few years, Gerrit Cole recently got bit by the injury bug and possibly a huge bite, Cole felt “discomfort” in his pitching elbow and and is seeking a 2nd opinion after one MRI was done. The words discomfort in an elbow tend to lead to strained or torn UCL and usually require Tommy John, this will be a huge blow to the Yankees and their playoff hopes.
Other notable names that are hurt are; RP Jake Cousins forearm, possible return date April, RP Jonathan Loaisigia returning from TJ Surgery out till May, Tim Matzek RP oblique injury, return date unknown, Clayton Beeter has been moved to the bullpen with shoulder discomfort possibly ready for opening day baring any setbacks.
Internal options to replace LeMahieu and Stanton like I said are there, might not be the perfect solution but The Yankees will not entertain the idea of JD Martinez or trading for Nolan Arenado. I say give Spencer Jones a chance seeing as the Yankees tend to wait on prospects too much sometimes, this kid looks primed and ready, he does need to cut back on the whiffs but the potential is there. Oswald Peraza or Oswaldo Cabrera can handle duties at 3B defensively are solid options, but the bats is less than desirable really for both.
A real stretch would be to bring up George Lombard Jr., but as stated the Yankees coddle prospects and hold them down longer than a lot of other franchises.
Yankees pitcher Marcus Stroman was 6th man on the totem pole, now he is basically forced back into the rotation as a mid starter now, if Stroman can focus and be the Stroman of old from Toronto or his other two stops in Chicago and with the Mets, he has had decent starts but we’ll soon see what happens. Lastly Will Warren who stunk bad last year but was rookie, still is really. Warren has been excellent this spring 2-0 with 11 K over 8 IP with a 1.13 ERA and an amazing 0.53 WHIP. Yes this is spring training and small sample size but definitely better than his 10+ERA last year
