Lakers Comeback Driven by Defense

The Lakers were down 84-73 before Dalton Knecht hit a buzzer beater at the end of the 3rd. It looked like the Lakers win streak was in perail but this is a different Lakers team from the past several seasons.

The Lakers preceded to outscors the Knicks 23-15 in the 4th quarter and then Luca Doncic and LeBron took over in Overtime to seal the win. Giving us a reminder for why this Lakers squad is a legit Championship Contender.

Its all about Defense

The NBA gets a bad reputation because of these teams that take a bunch of threes and score well over 100 points, and the fouls that get called drive fans crazy but defense does matter, and the best teams typically have both a top 10 offense and defense and usually you want one of those to be top 5.

Looking at this Lakers team, they seemed to be giving up more defense for more offense, but the Lakers have continued to play excellent defense. In the past 7 weeks, the Lakers have had the best statistical defense, and then you combine that with the elite playmaking they now have with Doncic it’s a recipe for consistent success.

JJ Redick Deserves a Lot of Credit

The players are playing hard and giving consistent effort on the defensive side, which includes LeBron, who at 40 could be giving a pass because of age for not putting consistent effort on that side but that’s not the case. The Lakers are becoming a chaotic, switch heavy unit, which in the beginning wasn’t the case. Now that they have rounded their roster out a bit, they can do that with communication and again effort.

JJ Redick might be a rookie head coach, but he is earning his stripes. Across the league, he has received messages with opponents saying how hard the Lakers play and how proud he is of the players for building that reputation. Now we haven’t seen Redick in a playoff scenario, but a year ago the Lakers were stuck in play-in territory. Now they are squarely in the mix to win the West.
