Reaching on some players pays off sometimes, and sometimes it makes you look silly or like a real beginner. No offense to beginners, but newbies do your thing! Drafting can take years to perfect, if you ever do. Hey some managers just play for fun and mix it up too, and that’s okay. This article with help new and seasoned managers both or at least I hope it does. REACHING DOESNT MEAN GO CRAZY, LIKE IN THIS FIRST INSTANCE I HAD TO BACKTRACK TO ACTUALLY DEFINE REACHING SO I MYSELF DON’T LOOK LIKE A FOOL.

I would reach for NYY Jasson Dominguez, not just because I am a Yankees fan. Reports are saying the Yankees are seriously considering starting Dominguez in the leadoff spot. What’s not to like with Dominguez, he’s got the power and speed combo down pat, if he is an on base guy then, he will set the table for the likes of Bellinger and Judge…
Now back to the BOLD statement above, Dominguez is going around 149th on average. This is one of the other things I spoke of before, know your league and possibly the managers in it, if you know the managers you can kind of feel where their head is too, this helps. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and I’m taking Dominguez substantially higher than 149, I might even try and get him at 90. This is just a hunch as are most “reaches.” But Dominguez is a huge target as your first reach.

Jung Hoo-Lee of the SF Giants really hasn’t showed us anything as of yet since coming over from the KBO, Lee was an MVP in 2022 in Korea where he racked up an 85 runs, 23 HR &113 RBI campaign. Fully healthy and supposed to be entrenched in the Giants lineup as their everyday leadoff hitter Jung Hoo is projected to hit .294 with 14 HRs and the runs will come.

Lets face it here, everyone is going to take the Dodgers phenom, SP Roki Sasaki, he was the talk of the offseason, besides the Juan Soto circus that is. Sasaki went 9-4 with a 2.02 ERA compiled 173 K’s in 129 IP for the Chiba Lotte Marines in his first full season in NPB. The hype is there as it was with fellow Japanese star Yoshinobu Yamamato and he has the stuff too just needs to stay healthy. With Sasaki I can’t tell you how to gamble but I’d reach for him and reach a tad earlier than most to make sure you get him.

If Fresh fruit dangles long enough they get picked eventually. I find with the players you can “wait on” you will still find as viable assets to your team especially in the form of relief pitchers or super utility guys that can give much needed points/stats.

Trevor Megill, Brewers RP, with Devin Williams gone to the Yankees, you can probably let this player dangle a little longer than most closers as your fellow managers will be gung-ho to get the big name closers.
Twins’ Griffin Jax will be there and he’s not a closer or even a setup man but if an injury occurs he can slide into the high pressure role and has been solid, last season Jax did come up with 10 saves and 24 holds. Mainly because of injuries to the Twins Duran and Acala. Jax also showed he can mow ’em down he struck out 95 in 71 IP with a 2.03 ERA and 0.97 WHIP.
Bobby Abreu Astros RP same as Jax is a flame thrower shutting down opposing batters 103 K/78.1IP with a 1.16 WHIP
Lots of pitching points/stats to be found by being patient.

Tampa’s Christopher Morel a player who plays all over which is nice for a utility spot, he struggled last year hitting just .191/.258/.289 with three homers over 49 games. Morel is eligible at 2B/3B/OF, is still just 25 years old and capable of reaching 30 homers. I’ve never seen him drafted this year due to his lack luster 2024. if he’s there with your last pick or two, grab him.
Last player I’m gonna mention should be there at the end so definitely grab him and surprise your fellow managers. SF Giants 1B Bryce Eldridge is gonna rake, as a teenager and hit .291/.374/.516 with 23 homers in 446 at bats last year. Eldridge is listed at 6’7”, 223 lbs and he uses that size to generate some of the best power you’ll see from a prospect who hits from the left side (or any side really.) His lengthy swing makes him unlikely to hit for a high average. Eldridge will however hit for great power and get on base. Bryce is a must own in all leagues especially you keeper and dynasty leagues.

Hope some of this article helps you in any upcoming drafts you may be in, if not pass the info on to some friends.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
