My wife and I swore we were going to have a “No Spend” 2025. We planned it out, we made lists that contained things we had in 2024 that we were going to cut out in 2025. We then tallied up all the money we were going to save, and we went through and saw other places and other expenses we could pay off of we stuck to this “No Spend” philosophy. That was what we were going to use as motivation to stick to the plan. Well, we were forced to move from our 1,200 foot apartment to a home that is almost double the size for not much more rent per month, and we jumped at the chance. Problem was, to do so we had to essentially spend money, and moving is not cheap. My point is, we went from “No Spend” to a spending spree in a matter of a couple weeks. Baseball teams did not. Most of them stuck to their “No Spend” and as Spring Training games start this weekend, it just seems off.

Baseball fans, did you know that 22 of the 30 teams in baseball actually have cut their payrolls? Almost half, 14 of the 30 teams spent less than $50M total on free agent signings this off-season. Eight of them spent less that $25M total on free agent signings. The Miami Marlins and the Milwaukee Brewers spent less than $5M total on free agent signings. In fact, the St. Louis Cardinals spent $0 dollars on free agent signings, no that is not a typing error, they spent $0 dollars!

On the other end of the spectrum, only 8 teams spent over $100M on free agents this off-season. The Rangers, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Giants, Diamondbacks, Yankees, Dodgers and Mets. Those teams just mentioned went from least amount over $100M spent to most total amount of money spent over $100M.

Think back to the start of the off-season. How many players did you see on free agent trackers and free agent lists and think, “That guy is going to get PAID!” Well, most of them did not, and if they did it was early in the off-season. Do you know how many contracts have been signed by free agent baseball players this off-season that were 5 years or more? The answer should shock you. The answer is 6. Only Juan Soto 15 years) with the Mets, Max Fried 8 year contract with the Yankees, Willy Adames 7 years with the Giants, Corbin Burnes 6 year deal with the Diamondbacks, and two 5 year deals one that Blake Snell got with the Dodgers and Anthony Santander signed with the Blue Jays. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that was it.

Looking at the total team payrolls for the 2025 season 8 teams have a total team payroll under $100M. And if we expand the number to $150M the number of total team payrolls jumps from 8 to 17. Seven teams have a total team payroll in excess of $200M. They are, in order from least highest over $200M to highest the Braves, Rangers, Blue Jays, Yankees, Phillies, Mets, and Dodgers.

With the NFL Salary Cap continuing to increase, year after year,(you can read all about that even with a team by team breakdown here) and the craziness of this MLB, I know the talk has been about a Salary cap in MLB. These numbers prove there does not need to be a salary cap, there needs to be a salary floor.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
