WASHINGTON D.C. – Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals took center ice this evening against the Ottawa Senators. Many Capitals fans, who would love to see their team hoist the Stanley Cup once again, are looking forward to something more special.
The Capitals and Senators were in an absolute barn burner, going to overtime, tied 0-0. The Capitals took 27 shots on net to the Senators 24. Only one shot mattered.
With 3:07 remaining in OT, Sandin retrieved the puck in the Caps defensive zone and skated up ice with Ovi to his left, Sandin dished the puck over to Ovi who ripped one past Merilainen, the Sens goaltender, giving the Capitals the win in OT. That was Ovechkin’s 874th career goal. Why is that so important?
Now with 37 games remaining in the regular season, Ovechkin is only 21 goals away from 895 career goals. That number would breaking the Great Wayne Gretzky‘s record that he has held since 1994, when he scored his 802nd career goal, passing the then record holder, Gordie Howe.
Gretzky played in the NHL for 20 years, playing in 1,487 games, scoring 894 goals with 1,963 assists, totaling 2,857 points in his NHL career.
Ovechkin is playing in his 20th season, playing in 1,455 games, scoring 874 goals (so far) with 709 assists, totaling 1,583 points.
I think it is safe to say Ovi is definitely a goal scorer, while Gretzky was a goal scorer and a playmaker. It is very difficult to judge who is the more overall better player, with the game changing since Gretzky playing in the league.
We will see Ovechkin break Gretzkys record this season, I can guarantee that.
