The boxing world is mourning the loss of WBA gold cruiserweight champion Paul Bamba, who passed away at age 35. The news was shared by his manager, R&B star Ne-Yo (Shaffer Chimere Smith).

Bamba’s death comes shortly after his historic victory on December 21, when he defeated Rogelio Medina by knockout in New Jersey. The win was particularly significant as it marked his 14th stoppage victory in 12 months, surpassing Mike Tyson’s record for most professional bouts in a single year.

The champion’s untimely passing was announced by Ne-Yo his close friend and manager less than a week after this career-defining achievement.

Ne-Yo released this statement:

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives,”.

“He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything, he was a tremendous individual that inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination.

“We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief.”

Just after his fight in peaking with Bloody Elbow, Bamba called out Jake Paul, saying he was the influencer-turned-boxer’s quickest shot at a real title bet.

“Jake talks a lot about wanting to be a world champion so my simple message to him is that I have something that you want; a real title,” Bamba said.

Bamba was a former Marine and Puerto Rican boxer, who many of us loved and were excited about. We will miss Paul greatly.

RIP Paul Bamba

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
