In a very solid heavyweight championship fight, the real heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk retained his title with a unanimous decision win over former champion Tyson Fury for the second time in 2024. This was a rematch of an instant classic that took place back in May that saw Usyk claim the championship from Fury. Below are highlights from their first encounter.

The fight was fought at a brisk pace early on, with both fighters having their moments.  The key early on was the activity and body punching from Usyk against a fighter who was 6 inches taller and outweighed him by 55 pounds, despite Fury having his moments with his jab and reach.

As the fight went on into the middle and later rounds, the body attack of Usyk began to show on Fury as his activity started to slow down, and Usyk started to step up the aggression. Fury would have his moments, but they came fewer and farther between as Usyk was starting to line up with the overhand lefts that had Fury hurt in their first fight.

As the fight went into the last few rounds, Usyk had full control of the fight and was able to do whatever it was he needed to do to retain his legitimate heavyweight championship. As the final bell sounded, many fans in the arena and around the world waited in anticipation for the official results fearing another bad decision was in the making. All 3 judges scored the fight correctly 116-112 in favor of the champion Usyk, who retained his status as the best fighter pound-for-pound.

One of those rare nights where everything went right, including the official result.

The sport of boxing won, as well as Oleksandr Usyk.
