The Cincinnati Reds have traded 2020 NL Rookie of the Year Jonathan India and Outfielder Joey Wiemer to the Kansas City Royals for RHP Brady Singer. India, has been the subject of many trade rumors over the last season and a half. With this trade he lands on a Royals roster that needs infield help at 2nd base.

Cincinnati gets a former first round pick in Brady Singer that will throw a lot of innings. Last season Singer threw 179.2 innings. Only Hunter Greene threw over 150 innings for the Reds last year, and that was only by one out as a threw 150.1 innings. Singer’s record in 2024 did not reflect his overall body of work. Pre All-Star break, Singer was 5-6 with a 3.20 ERA with 104 innings pitched with 99 strikeouts and 32 walks. The Royals will get a proven clubhouse leader in Jonathan India that has a sneaky good bat and works walks. India has a career 10.5% walk rate and the league average is only 8.4%. His defense needs a little work but he has displayed improvement in 2024. India embodies everything you want in a player as a teammate, Royals fans are going to love him.

It was clear both teams were ready to move on from their respective players and now both players will get a fresh start. It can also be said that both teams traded from places of strength. The Reds had eight infielders on their 40 man roster while before the trade the Royals had 22 pitchers on their 40 man roster.

“This was all about acquiring a lead-off hitter, and knowing the athletic ability that he has.” Said Royals said Royals Executive Vice President and GM J.J. Picollo.

Why did the Royals GM say this? Because last year the Royals were dead last in on base percentage from the lead-off spot in all of Major League Baseball.

India will turn 28 in December with 2 more years of club control. Singer is also 28 with 2 more years of club control. India is due $5MM this season with his 2026 salary determined in arbitration. Singer made $4.85MM last season and is under club control for two more years while he is set to make 7.5 million in 2025. Financially, and length of time, the trade seems relatively even.

The wild card here is center fielder Joey Wiemer. He is under club control until 2029 and was only paid $740,000 last year in Milwaukee. He is only 25 years old, but he has also only had 393 at bats while India, for comparison, has had 1905 at bats.
