The Cincinnati Reds have added 2 minor league prospects to the 40 man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft. Any player drafted at the age of 18 or younger is eligible after five years in the minors, while players drafted at 19 years old or older are eligible after four years to be selected by another team should another team choose to do so. That player must be added to the new team’s 26 man roster. Players must play on the major league team or they’re subject to be returned to their previous team.

The Reds have added Arizona Fall League standouts Luis Mey and utility man Tyler Callihan to their 40 man roster to avoid them being subject to the Rule 5 draft.

Luis Mey was named the AFL relief pitcher of the year. Mey only allowed 1 hit and 0 runs in 8.2 innings this fall. Mey has electric stuff, his fastball was clocked as high as 101.8 in the AFL this year. In 2024, Mey had a 2-5 record with a 3.44 ERA. He had 63 strikeouts in 55 innings but walks would be his kryptonite. He allowed 43 walks in those 55 innings pitched. If Mey can get figure out his command, he has all the tools to be an elite Major League closer.

Tyler Callihan is primarily a 2nd baseman, but has super utility role makeup. The 24 year old played in just 74 games in 2024 due to injury, but performed well when he did play. Slashing .276/.359/.429 in 261 at bats between AA and AAA.

It’s unlikely either player will make the Major League roster coming out of spring training. The Reds obviously see the potential in these 2 young players, making sure another team won’t select them in the Rule 5 draft. Notable players not added to the 40 man are Jose Acuña, Austin Hendrick, Andrew Moore and Ivan Johnson among others. The Reds have a couple open 40 man spots they can use in Free Agency. Not every player currently on the 40 man roster is safe either. There could be decisions made on players like Jacob Hurtubise, Blake Dunn, etc.
