On October 26th, Honor Among Wrestling held their Never Surrender event from the Bettendorf Community Center. The event was highlighted by appearances from MLW Featherweight Champion, Janai Kai and former WWE/current NWA wrestler Chris Adonis/Masters.

Casket Match Theseus vs. Jack Valor

For the initiated, a casket match can only end when one participant being placed in the casket and the lid being shut. I hope this lives up to the standard of Alabama Doink vs. Heidenreich. Snark aside, the match started out hot with both competitors trading blows until the match came out of the ring. Theseus, being divinity, took charge of the war outside of the ring. Just when Valor looked to start taking control of the match, Theseus’ associates, White Meat (Robbie Reeves & Stone Ambrose) came in and took advantage of the no disqualification stipulation to lay a beating on Valor with a chair. The beating only ended after Theseus hit a Pedigree before stuffing Valor into the casket with White Meat sitting on the lid for a Theseus victory. Afterwards, Theseus cut a thirty-minute promo just for the ringside camera.

Women’s Legacy Title Match: Regan Lydale (c) vs. Noelle the Marionette w/ Salem Wolfe

Noelle’s mind games were no match for Regan’s wrestling skills, often thwarting Noelle’s early attempts at offense. However, Salem Wolfe interjected himself multiple times, without referee admonishment (that’s ref bias right there) which ultimately allowed Noelle to get on the offensive, targeting the long limbs. However, Regan was a fighting champion and fought through the pain and numbers disadvantage to hit her pumphandle slam. Wolfe once again interfered, saving the match for Noelle. Noelle repaid this favor by beating Regan with a trash can lid and standing tall with the belt, that she technically did not win. However, Noelle licked it, so it’s her’s…them’s the rules.

Mateo Valentine & Lizard Man s vs. White Meat w/Theseus

In the initial stages of the match, the babyface tandem of Lizard Man and Valentine confounded White Meat with superior technical wrestling with a light lucha influence. After a long respite/strategy session outside the ring, White Meat charge the ring and blindside Valentine. This was the wrestling equivalent of the Ghostbusters “Get her!” strategy. Unlike the Ghostbusters, this was successful, with White Meat controlling the pace, and controlling the referee’s line of sight to occasionally bend the rules a bit. Overcoming the odds, Valentine tags in the Lizard Man, who cleans house with high tempo offense. Unfortunately, Ambrose locked him up with a flash rollup and the Lizard couldn’t escape the combination of rollup, feet on ropes, and Reeves holding the feet.

Janai Kai vs. Lili “La Pescadita” Ruiz

Ruiz thought it would be a great idea to taunt the “Kick Demon” with the Crane pose. Kai did not respond to that with a kick, but a hearty slap. Then the kicks began. Kai controlled the onset of the match until Ruiz went outside, when she swept Kai’s leg. Ruiz would maintain this control until a double down led to a strike-off, which there is next to no-way to beat Kai in that area. Despite the initial loss, the action was back and forth until Kai hit a series of roundhouse kicks to get the victory.

During intermission, a costume contest was held. I had to decline because I naturally look this scary. It’s not a costume, bro. The winners were a little Noelle in the children’s competition and the Dudley’s in the adult competition.

Reborn Championship Nic Nolan vs. Ethan Everheart vs. Stone Ambrose (c)

It was announced that due to the shenanigans of earlier in the evening, this will now be a match for the Reborn Championship. Ambrose is almost immediately sent to the floor, where he decided that discretion is the better part of valor and sat in the crowd for a bit. Everheart lives up to his name is was a babyface ball of fire, taking the fight to Nolan. At least until the action spilt outside…Nolan showed why he is known as “Nasty” and utilized quite a bit of the gymnasium to batter Everheart around. Eventually Ambrose decided to get involved because he could lose the title without being involved in the fall. Robbie Reeves also made his presence known, though spent a good chunk of the match unconscious on the floor. Everheart finally fired up enough to do a three-way trade of offense and everyone getting their stuff in. The final saw Ambrose hit a superkick on Everheart, Nolan spearing Ambrose, and Everheart hitting a discuss diving forearm on a kneeling Nolan to pin Ambrose and win the championship. And new!

Grayson Valor vs. Rafeal Quintero

We start off the match with a trading of offense that led to dives…and a respectful stalemate. The match was a back and for affair with neither competitor keeping a full advantage for long. Valor got to drop the straps and hit a Code Red for only two. However, Quintero utilized a rebound Liger Bomb to pick up the victory. After the match, Quintero gave Valor his due before giving Valor a package piledriver.

HAW Title Match Gunner Brave vs. Chris Masters

This is a story of strength versus technical wrestling with a little bit of mouth thrown in. Masters started strong, but Brave started throwing punches and his body at the larger “Masterpiece.” However, Masters continued to use his superior power to control the pace. Brave, ever the fighting champion, fired up and capitalized with a curb stomp. Masters, ever the veteren, found a way to lock in the Masterlock. Brave fought his way into the ropes to break the hold. Masters looked to lock it in again, but Brave flipped the momentum and rolled Masters up for a shocking three count. Gunner Brave retains!

After the match, Theseus’ group, Aura, surrounded the ring, joined by Rafeal Quintero. Masters and Brave look to take on the group when, swerve bro, Masters locked Brave in the Masterlock. Brave was then beaten down by the group, followed by a batch of babyfaces, like the Valors and Ethan Everheart, who all thought it would be a great idea to attack the group one at a time. Of course, this led to Aura ending the show standing tall.

The evening had its ups and downs, with most of the matches either featuring screwy finishes or swerve beatdowns afterwards. However, Honor Among Wrestling continues to highlight a young, hungry roster mixed with imported bigger named veterans to round out the shows.
