As the Diamondbacks look to build on their recent successes, the off-season presents crucial decisions regarding free agents and player options. With a mix of established players and promising talents, the choices they make will be pivotal for the team’s future. Let’s take a closer look at the D-backs’ own free agents and player options heading into the off-season.

Free Agents

1B Christian Walker

  • Position; First Base
  • 2024 Stats; 251 AVG, 26 HR 84 RBI
  • Analysis; Walker has been solid at first base winning back-to-back Gold Gloves. Walker has been with the Diamondbacks for 8 years. He would like to come back and play with the Diamondbacks.

RHP Paul Sewald

  • Position; Closer
  • 2024 Stats; 16 SV 4.31 ERA 43 K
  • Analysis; Sewald was acquired via trade from the Seattle Mariners. Sewald struggled at times this year. I’m expecting him to be signed by another team.

1B Josh Bell

  • Position; First Base
  • 2024 Stats; with the Diamondbacks .279 AVG, 5 HR 22 RBI
  • Analysis; Bell was acquired via trade from the Miami Marlins. If Walker signs with another team, then Bell could be a backup option for first base.

IF Kevin Newman

  • Position; Shortstop
  • 2024 Stats; 278 AVG, 3 HR, 28 RBI
  • Analysis; Newman was a key player for the team filling a utility role and stepping in for injured players. Newman could be a good fit for the Diamondbacks in the upcoming season.

Club Options

Merrill Kelly

  • Option Terms; 1 year $7 million (36 years old)
  • 2024 Stats; 3.82 ERA in 140 starts over six seasons in Arizona.
  • Analysis; Kelly pitched well for the most part. But, spent almost 4 months on the disabled list. The team should pick up his option.

Eugenio Suarez

  • Option Terms; 1 year $15 million (33 years old)
  • 2024 Stats; .788 OPS, 30 home runs in 158 games in 2024.
  • Analysis; Suarez struggled at the beginning of the year. He turned it on in the second half of the season. The team should also pickup his option.

Player Options

Jordan Montgomery

  • Option Terms; $22.5 million (32 years old)
  • 2024 Stats; An 8-7 record with a 6.23 ERA in 25 games with 83 K’s and 44 BB.
  • Analysis; Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick was on Burns and Gambo and took full accountability for signing Jordan Montgomery to the contract with the above second year option. Montgomery will pitch better in 2025, but will it be with the Diamondbacks or another team?

“Let me say it the best way I can say it: If anyone wants to blame anyone for Jordan Montgomery being a Diamondback, you’re talking to the guy who should be blamed,”

Mutual Options

In baseball, a mutual option is an option year at the end of a contract that both the player and the club must agree to exercise in order for it to become guaranteed for the next season.

Joc Pederson; $14 Million mutual option with a $3 Million buyout.

Randal Grichuk; $6 Million mutual option with a $500,000 buyout.

Scott McGough; $4 Million mutual option with a $750,000 buyout.

The Diamondbacks face key decisions regarding their free agents and options that could shape their roster for the next season.

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
