Introduction
The Arizona Diamondbacks entered the 2024 season riding high after their incredible postseason run in 2023. Expectations were elevated and fans wondered if the team could sustain momentum and make another deep postseason run. While 2024 was filled with both triumphs and setbacks, the Diamondbacks continued to grow into one of the most exciting teams in baseball. We are going to do a series of articles that dive into the highs and lows and defining moments of the 2024 D-backs season.

Injury Bug
The Dbacks early on were hampered by injuries to their key players
- Alek Thomas suffered an injury on March 31. He wouldn’t return until July.
- Geraldo Perdomo had surgery on his meniscus and was out until early June.
- Luis Frias and Miguel Castro sidelined with shoulder inflammation.
- Kyle Nelson went down for Thoracic Outlet Surgery.
- Ryne Nelson was struck in the elbow by a comebacker, though he spent minimal time on the IL.
- Merrill Kelly was pitching great in his first 4 starts but was placed on the IL with a shoulder sprain. He wouldn’t come back until early August.
- Zac Gallen excited his final start of April early with shoulder strain.
- Paul Sewald first month of the season on the DL with an oblique strain.
Season Struggles
Corbin Carroll got off to a bad start to the season. Carroll slashed a measly .193/.292/.246 in April, with just a single home run since Opening Day.
Eugenio Suarez who was traded from the Seattle Mariners to the Arizona Diamondbacks during the off-season started off hot then began to cool down. There were rumors mid-season of wanting to trade him. Suarez turned his season around and finished the 2024 season with 30 HR 100 RBI.

Paul Sewald was on the IL for the first month of the season. His pitching performances were like the Diamondback’s season, unpredictably up and down. At the end of June, he was perfect in save opportunities. Sewald blew his first save on July 2nd at Dodger Stadium, then another on July 5th against the Padres in San Diego. He blew his third save against the Braves in Phoenix. Things started to get better for him converting his next 4 chances but was wobbly again over the final week of July. Torrey Lovullo to make changes stuck with him as long as he could, some would say to long. But, eventually Sewald forced Lovullo’s hand and he had to reshuffle his bullpen.
