Cincinnati travels to Cleveland to take on the Guardians for a 2 game series with the Ohio Cup on the line. This is the Reds’ first series post David Bell. Freddie Benavides is making his managerial debut and is looking to impress for an opportunity to manage the club next season. The Reds have not outright won the Ohio Cup in 10 consecutive seasons.

Game 1:

Carson Spiers gets a late nod to start for the Reds, following a late scratch of Jakob Junis. He faces off against Tanner Bibee. Spiers has struggled since the All-Star break, going 2-5 with a 7.21 ERA. Spiers would struggle again Tuesday night, going 4, allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits, 2 being home runs in the 1st inning. The Reds would get 1 run in the 4th on a Spencer Steer single, but that’s all the Reds would get in this one. The Guardians would get a fantastic outing out of Tanner Bibee. 7 innings, 4 hits, 1 run and 7 strikeouts. The Guardians would get 1 more run in the 5th and 2 more in the 7th, Cleveland goes on to win 6-1 and out eight wins the Ohio Cup in 2024. Cleveland spoils the debut of manager Freddie Benavides and secure a first round bye in the playoffs.

Steven Kwan got the scoring going for Cleveland, hitting his 14th home run of the season to give the Guardians a 1-0 lead in the 1st. After a José Ramirez triple, Josh Naylor would single to score Ramirez and give Cleveland a 2-0 lead. The Guardians bullpen was perfect through 6 full innings, until TJ Friedl would reach on a bunt single to lead off the 7th. Friedl would score on an error off the bat of Elly De La Cruz. In the 8th, Jake Fraley would score on a base hit to center field that was bobbled by Lane Thomas, the game is tied at 2. But Cleveland would strike back in the 8th. Cincinnati will travel to Chicago to play the Cubs for the final 3 games of the season. The Reds have officially clinched a losing season and are certainly looking forward to the offseason. A lot of work needs to be done, from looking for a new manager and adding to this roster. I will plan on a offseason report following the conclusion of the Cubs series.
