Week 4 of the college football season kicks off with the South Alabama Jaguars taking on the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Thursday Night at 7:30 PM (EST), on ESPN. This game is a sneaky game, because USA has the chance to ruin a potential big G5 game next week. ASU needs to take care of business, on their end, in this game. The Liberty Flames need to hold up the other end on Saturday evening against the pesky, 2-1 East Carolina Pirates.
One of the games that I am personally, looking forward to is #24 Illinois Fighting Illini travel to Lincoln, to take on #22 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Game starts at 8:00 PM (EST) on FOX. Nebraska’s true freshman QB Dylan Raiola has looked every bit the part, of a budding superstar quarterback. He’s thrown for 5 TDs to only 1 INT, and isn’t making a lot of bad throws or decisions. He just needs to not make too many mistakes. Head coach Matt Rhule has this team looking good so far.
Nobody thought that Illinois would be not only undefeated, but also ranked in the Top 25. Head coach Bret Bielema has this team believing, especially after their big upset win in Week 2 against a Kansas Jayhawks team that was ranked 19th at the time. Returning QB Luke Altmyer has done a much better job so far in his second season as starter. He’s thrown for 6 TDs and 0 INTs. The Fighting Illini defense has 6 interceptions in 3 games.
The College Gameday Crew will be in Columbus, Ohio as my #3 Ohio State Buckeyes take on the Marshall Thundering Herd at Noon (EST) on FOX.
Thers isn’t going to be any upset here folks. Everyone is going to be watching to see Ohio State’s superstar true freshman WR Jeremiah Smith. He is showing that he’s next wide receiver in line to keep the long-standing tradition going at Wide Receiver U. The sleeper player to keep an eye on, is actually Marshall’s sophomore defensive end Mike Green. The young player has 14 tackles and 3.5 sacks already in only 3 games. The Buckeyes offensive line is still trying to gel and dealing with injuries. Buckeyes win 42-13.
Las Vegas has the Virigina Tech Hokies as 3.5-point favorites over the Rutgers Scarlett Knights in Blacksburg, VA. The Hokies are really still trying to get over the embarrassment of losing to Vandy in Week 1. Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano won this same game last season and once again, has Rutgers believing they can play with any team in America. This is a team that likes to run the ball and control the clock. I’m calling the upset here. Rutgers wins 31-27.
It’s been a hot minute since the #11 USC Trojans and the #18 Michigan Wolverines have met in the regular season. This is a game of opposites. The Trojans have been clicking on all cylinders. They got a big upset win against then ranked #13 LSU Tigers in Week 1. Meanwhile, the Wolverines got their butts kicked against the # Texas Longhorns in Week 2 and have struggled to beat Fresno State Bulldogs and the Arkansas State Red Wolves in their other 2 games. Game starts at 3:30 PM (EST) on CBS.
#12 Utah Utes take on the #14 Oklahoma State Cowboys in an important Big-12 Conference game, at 4:00 PM (EST) on FOX.
As of this writing, Utah starting QB Cam Rising is on schedule to start this game. He injured his finger in Week 2 and sat out last week. This Utes team is just different with him playing. in just over a game, Rising went 18 of 29, for 346 yards, with 7 TDs and 0 INTs. The tradition of the hardnosed Utes defense continues. In 3 games they have 193 team tackles with 10 sacks, and 3 INTs. They don’t miss tackles and make you earn every yard.
All the hype leading up the start of the Cowboys season was on HB Ollie Gordon. He was even on some pundits Heisman Trophy watch lists. So far though, he’s struggled, only averaging 3.5 YPC on 62 carries. They need to find a way to get him going in this game. The offensive line needs to starting holding up. The real story for OSU so far, has been returning starter QB Alan Bowman. He’s thrown for 967 yards, with 8 TDs and 2 INTs.
In a big, primetime game, the #6 Tennessee Volunteers take on the #15 Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, OK on Saturday night. Game starts at 7:30 PM (EST) on ABC.
The Volunteers are going to go in there and BEAT THE BRAKES off of the Sooners. I believe this game is going to get ugly after halftime. Both QB’s Nico Iamaleava and Jackson Arnold will dual it out in the first half. Tennessee will take the lead in the waning seconds of the first half, before getting the “double dip” and scoring on the opening kickoff of the second half. Then they’ll ride HB’s Dylan Simpson and Desean Bishop to put it away.
After their historic upset win against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, can the #23 Northern Illinois Huskies keep it going against the 2-1 Buffalo Bulls?
Will the second time be the charm for the unranked Bowling Green State Falcons? They almost upset #8 Penn State Nittany Lions in Week 2, losing 34-27. They head down to College Station, TX to take on #25 Texas A&M Aggies. They’ve had 2 weeks to prepare for this game.
Will the stunning fall of the winless Florida State Seminoles continue, or will they beat the undefeated California Golden Bears?
Conference games are really starting to kick in here. With the “new and improved” College Football Playoffs system, we start the process of who will end up with those coveted 4 “first round byes”.
