Saints QB Derek Carr

The New Orleans Saints marched into AT&T Stadium and delivered a resounding 44-19 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, moving to 2-0 and dropping Dallas to 1-1. This blowout loss ended the Cowboys’ 16-game home winning streak in the regular season and seemed strangely familiar to the playoff loss last January.

Alvin Kamara Ran Wild

The Saints’ running back, Alvin Kamara, was the star of the show, amassing 180 scrimmage yards and scoring four touchdowns, including an explosive 57-yard screen pass. The Cowboys’ defense had no answer for the Saints after being praised for their Week 1 performance in Cleveland.

Alvin Kamara had 4 TDs

Derek Carr had a Day

Derek Carr threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, complementing his passing game with a quarterback sneak for another score. His QB play was efficient and highlighted by a 70-yard touchdown pass to Rashid Shaheed. Carr finished 11 of 16 but lost his perfect passer rating early in the fourth quarter when he was intercepted by Donovan Wilson with the Saints leading 41-19

A Stunning Loss for Dallas

Cowboys Struggle at Home

The Cowboys, who entered the game with high expectations, found themselves behind early. Their defense, which wasi the backbone in week 1, allowed touchdowns on the Saints’ first six possessions. Offensively, besides CeeDee Lamb’s 65-yard touchdown, the Cowboys couldn’t keep pace with the Saints’ relentless scoring. Playing “catch-up” proved costly and Dak Prescott began to force throws and ended up with 2 interceptions and a fumble (recovered by Dallas). Prescott finished 27 of 39 for 293 yards after recently signing the $240 million, four-year contract with a record $231 million guaranteed. The Cowboys weren’t able to get much going on the ground, finishing with only 68 rushing yards for the day.

Concerns in the Big D

For the Cowboys, starting the season 1-1 is not reason for panic by itself. The concern in Dallas is the team’s inability to make adjustments when the game plan goes south. The Cowboys replaced Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn with Mike Zimmer to prevent this very same scenario, yet here we are again asking the same questions.

Aubrey Perfect

One bright spot in the Cowboys was kicker Brandon Aubrey. Aubrey went 4/4 and is now 8/8 on the season. As impressive as he has been, the Cowboys are going to need to start converting more drives into touchdowns rather than settle for 3 points.

Dak Scrambles vs The Saints

Looking Ahead:

The Cowboys are home again next week facing the Baltimore Ravens. Many had this match-up circled as one to watch in week 3, projecting a game between two league powerhouses. What we have now is a 0-2 Ravens team and a 1-1 Cowboys team both desperate for a win. The Cowboys will need to find a way to stop the running attack of Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry if they have any chance of heading into New York 2-1 in week 4.
